Food News: New restaurants, beer happenings, and MORE doughnuts

Noodles, doughnuts, award winning, survey taking, RVA food goodness all happening this week.

Because it’s against the law to start with any other news, Richmond is adding another doughnut shop to the sugary-dixie-countrifed baked mix, called Duck Donuts. Although it’s a booming franchise that has branched from North Carolina, co-owner Robin Griffith is taking the process slowly, so enjoy the simple pleasure of having only five places to choose for your doughnut fix instead of six. #LifeDecisions

Cellar to Table owner Katherine Haydon sued Yellow Umbrella Provisions owner David Whitby this month, stating he created a hostile work environment. Although they share the same business space, this is more than a roommate situation gone bad, as Haydon is seeking $850,000 in damages.

VCU Brandcenter graduate student, Jeff Tolefson, is questioning why Legend Brewery houses more of the elder RVA residents than its millennials. By putting his hard-earned marketing skills to work, he’s created a survey to get down to the bottom of why the youngins prefer the newer breweries over the 20 year old classic.

We know, we know, Dutch & Co. is amazing, and finally the chefs that work in the back and bring out the goods are being recognized as contenders for title of best chefs in the Mid-Atlantic Region in Food & Wine Magazine. We wish Caleb Shriver and Phillip Perrow all the best of luck!

C’est fantastique! The owners of Belle Vie European Bistro are opening another location in The Fan, calling it BRUX’L Cafe. Taking a bit more of a laid back vibe, the bistro will feature mussels, frites, Belgian burgers, and my mouth is now watering. Oh yeah, it’s opening around the end of May.

Rusty Beaver Brewery received the county’s approval this morning to complete the construction of a brewery & tasting room on their 17 acre farm. The farm and Hopyard is located six miles west of 95 in Beaverdam, VA. Stay tuned to their Facebook for more updates!

Noodle lovers will need to permanently place themselves in The Fan, as another noodle-based establishment will be opening its doors in April (hopefully!). For boozed out hipsters or hungry city dwellers, [Fan Noodle Bar] hopes to take care of your hunger.

  1. Wow, that Baja Grill is in a weird location. If it’s good, it doesn’t matter, but isn’t that stretch of Dabney Rd. more commercial/light industrial?

Pelon’s is just down the street from Strangways Brewery and across from Loveland Distributing. I have been there several times in the last week as I pass it on my way to work in the mornings and their breakfast tacos with chorizo are great! I asked about the location and it is also their central production facility for their salsa, which is sold in stores, and why it is located in a more industrial area (they have been there for a year and a half, but just opened the restaurant). Once inside you forget where you are…the space is very nicely done, with a casual, comfortable feel. Pelon’s has an open seating dining area and a great bar. They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As I mentioned, the breakfast tacos are great, and their regular tacos and burritos are excellent too. The fish tacos and shrimp tacos are really good and the “Dude” burrito with carne asada fantastic! In addition, it is family owned and run, and they have a couple other locations in the VA Beach area. It is worth the short trip off of Broad Street or Staples Mill Road.
