Food News: Let RVA eat cake, cheaper food, and go to festivals

A new happy hour downtown has graced us with its presence, there are new restaurants brought to us by veteran restaurateurs, cake is now easily accessible, and a fun festival is abrewing this weekend. What more could we ask for?!

Rappahannock now has a happy hour! If the only reason for not heading downtown was that there are other dollar nights around Richmond to suit your skinny wallets, you can now come visit the popular restaurant Sunday through Thursday! Indulge in $1 oysters and wallet-friendly drink specials.

Sorry to disappoint, Kardashian fans, but Dash is a new restaurant in Richmond, not the unattainable clothing store run by America’s favorite sisters. Don’t confuse this with dine and dash, as we’re positive the soups, sandwiches, and salads are affordable and packaged to go if you need to take your meal elsewhere. It’s brought to us by the owners of Toast and Estilo, so you have no excuse not to go and test it out!

The newly opened Monument City Coffee and Records is bound to be a Richmond favorite, for it features caffeine, sustenance, and (soon to be) beer. Oh yeah, and did I mention you can buy vinyl there? Nothing like a mix of two concepts under one roof to make Richmond an even more eclectic and wondrous city.

What used to be Parkside Cafe in Forest Hill is now the second location of Chef Mamusu’s African-Caribbean Cuisine. The menu features exotic comfort food, and well, if you like curry and all things spice, try it out and become part of its loyal following.

Shyndigz, our only choice for delicious late-night desserts (and we’re not complaining), is now open in The Fan. The menu features a wide array of pies and cakes, and you can dine in or carry out from 4:00 to 11:00 PM. Clearly they’re trying to get us to go elsewhere for breakfast and not indulge in cake every morning (yet).

We couldn’t go a week without any beer news–and boy do we have BIG news. This weekend, the RVA ROCK$ OnTap Festival is coming to Mayo Island, which will feature over 20 local craft beers, and for as low as $25 you get unlimited tastings. For information on RVA ROCK$ and the amazing people that would create such a festival, click here.

Boka, the popular food truck we all like to see at local events, now has a Fan location, called Boka Tako Bar. It will open THIS Friday in what used to be the former 304 Pizza Bar on Robinson.

The 2014 Richmond Restaurant Week is almost upon us! We’ll feature the menus of the participating restaurants starting next week. So keep refreshing our page, if you have the patience and diligence to last you until Monday.
