Food news: An institution closes, a new BBQ spot for VCU, and Ardent Ales finds a home

I’m so unbelievably sad that Perly’s is now closed and for sale, that only the news of a new Richmond Brewery keeps me going.

Here’s an uberbummer update to last week’s ultrabummer news that Perly’s had temporarily closed: now Perly’s is officially closed and up for sale. If you’ve got $498,000 and would like to save a Richmond dining institution, please let me know.

They’re open! They’re closed! They’re some other restaurant entirely! Richmond.com is reporting that Luckie’s Bar & Grille, which only opened on July 19th, is now closed and for sale.

Bigs BBQ’s W. Grace Street location is now open. Come one, come all, come VCU students with a craving for smoked meats! While the prospect of a local barbecue shop opening up both in the heart of VCU’s campus and just down the street from the city’s premiere vegetarian restaurant is wonderful in many ways, let’s have a moment of silence for the previous tenant of 933 W. Grace Street: Good Taste. You were a good–if a little weird–friend that even delivered to the Northside. #RIP

Update

In the comments below, Jason has informed me that Good Taste has just moved up the street! Balance has been restored to the universe!

This past Friday, Ashland’s Center of the Universe released their Oktoberfest, which officially means fall has fallen upon us like a cozy blanket of malt, yeast, and hops. This particular Oktoberfest is COTU’s take on a Munich fest bier, which means it’s easy to drink, well balanced, and beautiful to look at. The vital statistics: 5.7% ABV, 25 IBUs, and 7 SRM.

It’s been over a year since we last talked to Ardent Craft Ales, and while we’ve been busy doing whatever it is that we do here, they’ve been busy securing brewing space. According to Richmond BizSense, they’ve landed 9,000 sqft of space over on Leigh Street in Scott’s Addition. How many breweries can Richmond support? I say ten, twenty million? Give or take? I’m not joking. Keep opening more RVA-based breweries, please.

Estilo, which just opened a couple of weeks ago is now serving lunch starting at 11:00 AM. The new spot focuses on “foods from Central and South America, with an emphasis on Peru, Brazil, Argentina, Costa Rica, the Caribbean, and Mexico.” And, people, they’ve got a happy hour every day featuring 23 cocktails, six draft beers, and eight draft wines.

Estilo is located at 7021 Three Chopt Road.

This Saturday, the 17th Street Farmers’ Market hosts the Shockoe on the Half Shell festival. If you should choose to head down to the Bottom this weekend, you’ll be treated to oyster-related food from a handful of Richmond restaurants–including the impending The Pig & Pearl! Cold beer and live music will be on hand as well, and all those oyster shells will end up back in the Chesapeake Bay to help promote even more oysters!

I just opened the magazine, and there it was…

Kuba Kuba gets a mention in Food Network Magazine for their huevos rancheros.

Did you know Sepetember is Hunger Action Month? Did you know that the acronym for Hunger Action Month is HAM, which I find to be delightful? To support HAM, FeedMore is throwing a happy hour (PDF) next Wednesday, September 18th at their location near the Diamond (1514 Rhoadmiller Street). As with any great happy hour, beer and food will be available. 100% of the beer sale proceeds and 10% of the food sale proceeds benefit FeedMore. Festivities start at 5:00 PM.

What is the picture of the building at the top of this post?

And on another note, use caution if buying “groceries” at Kuba Kuba. I’ve checked out the dusty items on their shelves and many things are expired :-( Somebody needs to do a little housekeeping there!

  2. Good Taste isn’t closed, just moved into a new space up the street. They are now at 913 W. Grace.

@yoo hoo — That’s the future Ardent Spot

@Jason — You just changed my life.

That pic is of the new (old as hell) Ardent Brewery that will be opening in Scott’s Addition.
