RVA Beer Dinner, Sub Rosa Bakery opens, and a new Blue Goat menu
Church Hill continues its culinary dominance with not one, but two new dining spots, The Blue Goat makes its winter menu more accessible for dinners, and Casa Del Barco aims for late-December opening.

Church Hill is becoming quite the neighborhood for great food with new restaurants constantly popping up. After much anticipation, Sub Rosa Bakery opened this week, located in the informally named “Church Hill Bakery District” made up of Sub Rosa, WPA Bakery, and Proper Pie Co. You can stop by Sub Rosa for sweet or savory treats from 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM, Tuesday through Friday, and from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Saturday and Sunday. Church Hill People’s News got some really fantastic shots inside the bakery that will make you jump in your car and head their way.

Also opening in Church Hill this past Saturday was Johnson’s Southern Comfort at 2306 Jefferson Avenue. Owner and chef Deandre Johnson recently stated in Richmond Magazine that the restaurant will serve “great comfort food with wholesome vegetarian options.” Johnson also owns OMG Cafe and Lounge in Church Hill, which is currently under renovations.

This past summer, we told you about Kevin Healy’s new restaurant, Casa Del Barco, located along the Canal Walk. He was aiming for a December 6th opening, but has pushed that back to December 28th. The menu will still feature dishes such as: lobster ceviche, green chorizo, beef tongue tacos, handmade tamales, and six different salsas all made with fresh, local ingredients. In fact, the restaurant won’t even have a freezer–that’s how fresh we’re talking, people! Over 100 types of tequila will be available with happy hour plans in the works. Casa Del Barco translates to “boathouse” in Spanish, which is fitting since Healy is the guy behind The Boathouse at Rocketts Landing. They’ll be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner with brunch served on Sundays at 311 S. 11th Street.

Blue Goat has a new winter menu that has some tamer options for diners who are still a little nervous about the whole “head to tail” dining concept. You can check out that new menu here (PDF).

It is a shame that the Blue Goat has to dumb down its menu for the average Richmonder, it was never too adventurous but now it looks like something you’d find at chain restaurant in Short Pump.
