Favorites: Toast’s Sloppy Joseph
Many of us remember the sloppy joe as gloppy cafeteria fare from our elementary school days or rehydrated onions and peppers from a Sauer’s seasoning packet. The Sloppy Joseph ($12) at Toast masterfully updates the sandwich while preserving key flavors from the original. The meat is a mixture of coarsely ground chorizo and lamb with Moroccan spices (many of which show up in sloppy joe recipes) cooked slowly with tomatoes, onion, and garlic. The soft brioche bun will fall apart, but isn’t that kind of the point?
