Favorites: Proper Pie Co.’s custard slice
If you venture up to Church Hill on a Saturday or Sunday you can find something rather wonderful at Proper Pie Co. that isn’t pie at all: the custard slice ($3.50). This rectangle of confectionary bliss alternates layers of flakey, crisp puff pastry with creamy vanilla custard. A layer of vanilla frosting, beautifully shot through with chocolate, tops off the dessert.

That appears to be a Napoleon
I believe you’re correct – I supposed this is just their more casual name for the thing, but now I wish I’d recalled – and said as much – in the write-up.
Yes indeed it is also called a Napoleon! In New Zealand it is a Custard Slice, in Australia it’s a Vanilla Slice, and in France it is a Mille-feuille. Delicious whatever you choose to call it though. (A custard slice by any other name would taste as sweet?!) Love the photo Daniel! :)
We always said the best Mille-feuille we ever ate (outside of Paris) was in Dubai, that is, until now. The Custard/Vanilla/Napoleon, whatever name it goes by, is absolutely delicious and worthy of listing among the BEST.
