Favorites: Proper Pie Co.’s chicken and kumara savory pie

I didn’t have a clue what a “kumara” was the first time I stepped in to Proper Pie Co. in Church Hill. It’s nothing too foreign, however: it’s the Kiwi name for a type of sweet potato, and it’s a perfect fit in the chicken and kumara savory pie ($5.50). The fragrance and flavor of fresh tarragon are a bonus, but that flakey, buttery crust literally and figuratively holds it all together.

The menu changes at least a little every day, but co-owner Nikki Price assured me this one’s an every day option.

  1. Proper Pie is a winner. The sausage rolls are SO GOOD, too! Just like in Auckland.
