Last year we brought you The Monument Avenue 10k by the numbers. This year, we thought we’d show off the astounding numbers of the Monument 10k with a little chartsandgraphs. Enjoy!

Last year we brought you The Monument Avenue 10k by the numbers. It was a really splendidly written piece, if I do say so myself, and in it we learned some incredible facts about bananas and the circumference of the earth. This year, we thought we’d show off the astounding numbers of the Monument 10k with a little chartsandgraphs. Enjoy!

Number of entries; 2000–2012

 

For those paying attention, in 2011, the 10k was sixteen times larger than it was in 2000. It has doubled in size since 2006. Mind boggling! The deadline to register for the race was last night, and the upper limit of entries was 42,500.

If the race is maxed out this year, there will be 1,186 more entries than last year.

Radioactive bananas

Did you know bananas are radioactive due to their deliciously high potassium content? Oh, it’s not enough to cause any problems UNLESS YOU ATE ALL 32,000 BANANAS provided by the 10K. If you could fit 16,000 pounds of bananas down your gullet you’d end up with the radiation dose of a mammogram.

Octogenarian racers are fabulous and inspiring! Speaking of, did you know that the lovely local sandwich shop, Garnett’s, is named after the owner’s grandmother who was busy hiking the Grand Canyon as an octogenarian? What do have planned when you turn 80?
