Chairman Brando’s Fancy Finds: Feb 9, ’11
While everyone else was busy watching Christina Aguilera complete her march toward irrelevancy, I was beginning another run through The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. I probably played this game more than any other as a kid — more than the original even. Back before everyone lost their attention spans and would only accept instant gratification from games (see: Call of Duty), these sorts of adventure games were simply the best.

I probably played this game more than any other as a kid — more than the original even. Back before everyone lost their attention spans and would only accept instant gratification from games (see: Call of Duty), these sorts of adventure games were simply the best. They tapped into our young, malleable minds and hit right at the heart of all our secret desires. Back then, well before we grew up and drank a giant pot of lamesauce, it was easy to believe that real adventure was within our grasp, that ordinary people could accomplish great things, and that we could one day find ourselves fated to participate in some world-saving quest in which we were the hero. Nowadays that magic is all but lost, and our quests consist mostly of paying the cell phone bill, buying Hot Pockets, and calling our ISP because YouTube is being slow. Oh, how our mighty dreams have fallen.

I know we’re barely five weeks into it, but I expect this one to have some staying power. Predictably, there is a kitty involved, but when you put said kitty in slow motion and throw some good music over top, it quickly ascends to greatness. It’s even better if you load the 720p version and watch it full screen.

Comparing Zelda to Call of Duty is like comparing an Easter egg hunt to football. Sure they can both be fun and can both take place in a field… but some people like competition and some like wandering around for hours looking for a kick-ass sword only to find they’re missing a key that they passed hours earlier.
Also, I am still in denial of ever drinking the lamesauce… sigh
