“Camp In” at the Science Museum

Hey yo, Indoor Kids! Registration for the Science Museum of Virginia’s spring Camp Ins is underway. Check out what they’ve got in store for you and yours!

When I was about eight years old, my Girl Scout troop had a sleepover at the Science Museum of Virginia. My friends and I (along with several other squads of elementary schoolers) spent the evening running around the museum–after hours, no less!–and then snuggled up in our sleeping bags in the Rotunda and watched Foucault’s Pendulum as we fell asleep. It’s a childhood memory I legitimately cherish. I know, reading what I’ve just written makes me want to slow-barf right along with you, but it’s true.

My Camp In at the Science Museum may have happened over 25 years ago, but luckily our local saints of science education are still at it, hosting themed, overnight events that promise tons of hands-on activities, plenty of museum exploration, and a movie screening in the Dome. Programming at these events are also specifically designed to fulfill SOL and scout badge requirements.

Registration for 2016’s Camp Ins is underway. Take a look at what they’ve got lined up for your wee and tween scientists this spring…

Awesome Astronomy

Campers will find their cosmic addresses, create their own sky globes, learn about constellations and comets, and enjoy screenings of Dark Universe and Secrets of the Sun.

• March 4th and 5th
• Recommended for grades 3 through 6
• $45 per child and $20 per adult

Paleontology

It’s a night of prehistoric adventures as campers excavate fossils, create dinosaurs, design ecosystems, and head to the Dome to watch Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure.

• March 11th and 12th
• Recommended for grades 3 through 6
• $45 per child and $20 per adult

Girls in Medicine

Middle school girls join forces with professional women in medicine in this special, girls-only Camp In sponsored by Bon Secours Richmond Health System.

• April 8th and 9th
• Recommended for middle school girls
• $10 per child and $10 per adult

Earth Day

Campers will hit the Challenge Lab to create their own windmills, get all hands-on as they learn about the water cycle, and probably lose their minds over Pandas: The Journey Home because, well, have you seen a panda?

• April 22nd and 23rd
• Recommended for grades 3 through 6
• $45 per child and $20 per adult

Food Science

An evening spent discovering the science behind favorite recipes, a screening of Great White Shark, and the chance for your kids to learn everything they ever wanted to know about different types of mold. Yum…?

All Camp Ins begin at 6:00 PM on Friday evening and finish up at 9:00 AM on Saturday morning. Breakfast is provided. At least one adult is required for every four children.
