Black History Month print sale

In honor of Black History Month, East End Cemetery is selling prints of prominent African Americans from the Jackson Ward community. All proceeds from the print sale with go towards renting goats to help clear brush from the cemetery.

Local artist Barry O’Keefe has produced prints of Maggie Lena Walker, John Mitchell, Jr., and Rosa  Dixon Bowser. The prints also include local landmarks such as the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank and the Black History Museum. Each is hand printed on unbleached Japanese mulberry paper.

From East End Cemetery:

East End Cemetery is one of a group of historic African American cemeteries in Richmond, Virginia known as the Four Cemeteries at Evergreen. Many of Richmond’s most prominent African American residents are buried in these cemeteries. For many years these cemeteries have been largely abandoned; paths are overgrown and most graves have been lost to the forest.

Today, volunteers working to return the cemeteries to their former grandeur. These three portraits of famous Richmonders buried at the abandoned cemeteries were created to support the volunteers in their efforts.

Barry O’Keefe was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. He received a BA in English and Russian Studies from the College of William and Mary in 2010, and is currently pursuing an MFA in Printmaking at Ohio University.
