First there was Garden Wars. Then we had Supper Punch. Now, as a tribute to the holiday season and it’s tendency to to bring out the sugar-fiends in us all, we present: BAKER BASH!!!

We’re scaling things down and switching the format up a bit this go around. Baker Bash will run this week only, with one of our four competitor showcased each day (Monday through Thursday). They’ll share some photos of their (hopefully) delicious submissions, the recipe, and a little commentary to keep things interesting.

Then on Friday, we’ll open up voting so you all can pick your favorites — the winner will be announced a week from today. Hopefully you’ll all have a little fun and be inspired to add some new baked goodies to your holiday repertoire.

See? Easy peasy.

First up we have Maureen Furey. Maureen is an occupational therapist at VCU Health Systems. She loves running, baking, JMU and all things chocolate –- hence the running. In fact, she runs so much and got so good at it, she recently qualified for the Boston Marathon (no big deal).

Here she shares a family favorite that’s sure to please anyone and everyone at your next holiday party.

Peanut Butter Hershey Kiss Cookies with a Sprinkle of Christmas Cheer

Growing up these cookies were always my favorite at holiday parties and cookie exchanges. Chocolate, peanut butter, and candy canes are three of my favorite things, so I was excited to put all of them together to create a yummy Christmas treat. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Ingredients

  • 2 2/3 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2/3 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 package of Hershey kisses
  • 1 package of Hershey hugs
  • 1 package of candy canes
  • Additional sugar

Directions

Mix flour, salt, and baking soda in a large mixing bowl. Add peanut butter and softened butter. Stir in brown sugar and sugar until fluffy. Mix eggs and vanilla until smooth. Put dough into the refrigerator for one hour or until chilled.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Unwrap chocolate kisses and crush candy canes.

Make balls out of a teaspoon of dough and roll in sugar.

Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 8 minutes.

Remove from oven and add 1 kiss or hug to the center of each cookie. Sprinkle candy cane pieces onto the cookie.

Put on Christmas cookie plate and enjoy!

Be sure to tune in tomorrow to meet our second competitor: a relative of the winner of one of our previous competitions. With his family’s name at stake, will he deliver or crumble under the pressure? We’ll just have to wait and see…

  1. My mom always makes these for Christmas, though without the candy canes. They’re one of my favorites.

  3. Fixed.

Back to my regularly scheduled comment. I’ll eat candy canes on top of anything. I mean that, like a quarter for example.

  5. I’ve no sweet tooth at all, but the candy canes did it for me, those look great!

  6. Please deliver to the office. Thanks!
