BACON FESTIVAL, new sushi downtown, and tacos headed to Scott’s Addition

The Bacon Festival looms, a Fan spot gets a new chef and changes its name, and a new taco shop is set to open in Scott’s Addition. Lots going on this week in food!

It’s almost here ladies and gents. The most talked about event since, well let’s be honest, the Greek Festival last weekend: Richmond’s first BACON FESTIVAL. On Sunday June 9th, 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM head down to the 17th Street Farmers Market to rejoice in your love of bacon. Over 20 restaurants will be down there whipping up bacon-centric dishes and over 20 craft beers will be available for drinking. Beers are $6 and small plates are $3. CASH ONLY so plan ahead. They’re expecting A LOT of people, please put your patient pants on in the morning.

Also in festival news, the Beer, Bourbon, & BBQ festival is this Saturday June 8th, 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM for VIP ticket holders and 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM for the rest of us. There are 60 types of beers, 40 types of bourbons, and more barbecue than you can shake a pig at. A ticket gets you all you can eat and drink–so, in preperation, salads and water only on Friday. Since the festival is held inside at the Richmond International Raceway, the AC will be flowing for any meat sweats you may encounter from over eating. VIP tickets are $45 each and regular admission tickets are $35 each. Both options sold out last year, so order now if you’re interested.

Amy Ayers, who also owns Julep’s, is currently working with Mitchell on the new menu and creating a new logo for the restaurant. They hope to roll out all the changes in July.

A small fire broke out at Captain Buzzy’s on Tuesday that caused no injuries and no structural damage. Unfortunately, there was some reported damage to the roaster, and they’re waiting for health inspector reports to reopen. Captain Buzzy’s is located at 2623 E. Broad Street in Church Hill.

Haiku Sushi has officially opened at 2222 E. Cary Street in the former Sensi location. Hai Truong, chef and co-owner of Osaka and co-owner of Wild Ginger, opened the new space in a very quick three months. Truong is a partner in EAT, which owns Fat Dragon, Blue Goat, Osaka, and Wild Ginger. He used Osaka as his blueprint, with lower price points and more Vietnamese items offered on the menu.

In other restaurant opening news, En Su Boca, the former adult book store turned taco shop, is soooo close to opening. The mexican joint joins a growing number of new and tasty dining options in Scott’s Addition.1

Laughed inappropriately at the tacos joke, and then realized it was an apostrophe reference rather than innuendo for the building’s former tenant. :-/

Not sure if this made the list yet, but there’s a new Mexican restaurant, Nuevo Mexico Restaurante, at 9 N. 4th St. downtown. They are open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. Early reviews are good.

Was a name that translates to “In His Mouth” really the best choice for a porn-shop-turned-taco-stand?
