Ask Weather Dan: Tornadoes and topography

One reader asks: “In your March 9th Weather! update you said that a low pressure system was spawning tornadoes in Western Oklahoma. That low pressure system was supposed to move into our area the next day. Why is it that a system spawns tornadoes in one part of the country but not in another. Is it just because we have a different topography?”

Nicole asks:

Why is it that a system spawns tornadoes in one part of the country but not in another? Is it just because we have a different topography?

It’s important to note that it’s not just topography that makes certain regions more tornado-prone than others. The primary factor is the interaction of atmospheric elements on small scales. Oklahoma is flat, but so are parts of eastern Virginia and North Carolina, and they don’t see nearly the number of tornadoes that Oklahoma or Texas do. It’s because the right atmospheric ingredients, namely large amounts of moisture interacting with an incredibly unstable atmosphere, can come together to form violently rotating columns of air. There’s a specific field in meteorology called boundary layer meteorology that studies all of the factors and processes that determine how the lowest few kilometers of the atmosphere works.

Within boundary-layer meteorology, topography plays a role in tornado frequency. This map from the National Climatic Data Center shows the average number of tornadoes per year from 1953-2004.

We can see a lot of things that we would expect to see in a map like this – the states with the most tornadoes are concentrated in the southern Plains, following the traditional definitions of “Tornado Alley.” Other areas, namely the mid-Mississippi Valley and Gulf Coast regions see high numbers of tornadoes, as does Florida. Florida’s numbers are buoyed by the tornadoes embedded within landfalling tropical cyclones.

Fun fact: Hurricane Ivan (2004) holds the record for most tornadoes caused by a landfalling tropical system with 117. Ivan was responsible for 40 tornadoes in Virginia, the most in any state, setting the single-day record for tornadoes in the Commonwealth.

The only state to average less than one tornado per year was Alaska, and that’s not because of topography alone. It’s also not to say that tornadoes never happen in Alaska, because one did touch down in April 2005.

Recently, Michael Frates, a geographer at the University of Akron, took a look at the spatial distribution of strong (rated F3-F5 on the old Fujita scale), long-track (greater than 20 miles) tornadoes. His research, presented at the annual meeting of the American Association of Geographers, identified four distinct areas of high concentration of strong, long-track tornadoes.

Frates found four distinct areas with high concentrations of strong tornadoes: the southern Plains (the traditional “Tornado Alley” definition), the Ohio River valley, the deep South, and the coastal portions of the Carolinas. The highest concentrations of tornadoes were found in what Frates termed “Dixie Alley” across Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, extreme east Texas, Arkansas, and western Tennessee.

As we start looking on smaller scales, we find that even though topography does affect tornado frequency. it doesn’t completely negate the possibility of tornado formation. The National Weather Service office in Sterling, VA put together this map of tornadoes from 1950-2000 by county.

Again, we see the trends that we would expect – the majority of tornadoes fall across the eastern 1/2 of the state, roughly following the boundary between the Piedmont and Blue Ridge regions. The important thing to note here is that along and west of the Blue Ridge, the number of tornadoes seen in a majority of these counties is not zero. Western Virginia has become the target of tornadoes several times in history.

  • An outbreak in 1929 killed 12 students and a teacher at a school in the Rye Cove community in Scott County.
  • A pair of tornadoes, one an F3 that tracked for 30 miles, touched down in Lee, Wise, Scott, and Washington Counties and did nearly $500,000 in damage in 1944.
  • The Super Outbreak of April 3-4, 1974 (where an F5 tornado wiped half of the town of Xenia, Ohio off the map) dropped 148 tornadoes country-wide, including eight in Virginia, where one person was killed. Tornadoes caused damage from Lee to Augusta County that day.

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management has more information about the above tornadoes, as well as many tornadic events in Virginia as far back as 1776.

While topography does influence how often tornadoes form, other stronger atmospheric processes determine where and when tornadoes form, meaning even those is rugged mountainous terrain are at risk. Storm systems that generate tornadoes over Oklahoma rely on large amounts of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and high quantities of atmospheric energy which aren’t always available once systems cross the Appalachians. However, if those systems remain intact, people from Cumberland Gap to Cumberland County and points far beyond are equally susceptible to tornadoes.

    Having lived in Memphis for a while, I think that with the river bluff being situated where it is, it tends to prevent (though not totally) the primary city area from getting tornadoed.

Yesterday, I was at a Keysville community college campus (border of Charlotte and Lunenburg counties) and the building had interior rooms designated as “tornado safe rooms.” First time I’ve seen that. Weird because those counties don’t rate nearly as high as some of the neighboring counties for tornado occurrences.

  3. Jeb, some food for thought on that topic: Shelby County, TN saw 45 tornadoes between 1950 and 1995. Any protection the bluffs might offer would depend heavily on storm track.

    Mississippi State University hosts the Mid-South Tornadoes Database. A quick look at all the tornadoes in Shelby County from 1873 onward shows several tornadoes whose tracks actually crossed the Mississippi River from Arkansas – there are three total tornadoes whose tracks include both Crittenden County, Arkansas and Shelby County, Tennessee. These were all strong (F2 or greater) tornadoes, so I would say that there is likely some credence to the theory. I also found a number of smaller tornadoes that touched down in Crittenden County that never made it across the river. However, it’s impossible to tell from this data exactly why that happened.

  4. Jason, I have reason to suspect that those numbers for Charlotte and Lunenburg counties may be slightly deflated. The National Weather Service relies heavily on spotter reports, so ti’s entirely possible that some weak tornadoes that were either underreported or not reported at all.

    That being said, I’m glad they have tornado-safe areas. The National Weather Service StormReady program has been great about bringing severe weather awareness to localities, and has highlighted the need to quickly communicate information to residents. Richmond, Chesterfield, and Colonial Heights are all Storm Ready and I hope that Henrico follows in their footsteps soon.

    Silly as it sounds, I always believed that the bluff encouraged funnel or pre-funnel currents to “bounce” back into the cloud deck. :) But I was in Memphis for a straight-line wind that did a lot of damage back in the mid-1990s.
