A hard look at Kanawha Plaza

The main feature is a long dry fountain.

Phil Riggan of Richmond.com takes a hard look at the state of Kanawha Plaza. Anyone that works near or travels past the plaza on a regular basis can pretty much guess what he found.

The city is working on an estimate on the cost of repairs, but the fountain is out of service until it is fixed.

There is an “Adopt-A-Spot” sign in the park from the Richmond Clean City Commission that credits the Richmond Area Concierge Association with the care of Kanawha Plaza (photo of the sign at left). Trouble is, that association disbanded more than a decade ago.

The city apparently has little money to care for Kanawha Plaza, but when we host the Richmond 2015 races that September, the current condition won’t look to good all those visitors wandering around downtown. It might be a little like the impression that people had when they first saw Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, as our reader suggested with his Soviet reference.

There is a glimmer of hope. “The Enrichmond Foundation is working to organize a friends group to help care for Kanawha Plaza”.

Let the homeless who camp out there every night do some work on cleaning up Kanawha Plaza….

Is this really even a public park?

What, if anything, do the multi-BILLION dollar entities next to it say?

Another fail for Richmond. Instead of pursing new very expensive projects, why not fix what is there and make it more green space that people could actually use?!
