5 Things: Halloween, Halloween (Halloween, Halloween)

There are other things to do that aren’t Halloween things! Like, stay home and read a book, clean out your sock drawer, or fold your arms across your chest and say “Hmph” aloud.

1. This is Halloween (Everybody Give a Scream!)

In this town, we call home, everybody hails to the pumpkin song! Honestly, the lyrics to The Nightmare Before Christmas aren’t that killer, but that doesn’t mean the idea isn’t cool. A TOWN DEVOTED TO HALLOWEEN! That exists, actually, and it’s called Salem, Massachussetts. Have you guys been there for Halloween? It’s crazy! Make your own Salem-times by checking out our Halloween guide. It involves things to do with your kids! Things to do that will scare your kids! Things to do that will scare your adult friends! You’ll make walls fall, Jack!

  • All over this weekend
  • All over town
  • Probably very few dollars

2. War of the Worlds

Were you aware that there were Firehouse Radio Players!? I was not, and now I am deeply in love. These intrepid voice-acting enthusiasts bring you The War of the Worlds, which is so much fun. Maybe it’ll convince you, like it did the listening public in 1938, to run out into the streets screaming! Kinda like when we did our first Fake Richmonder post and instantly got asked if it was a joke or not. Sometimes, people are very trusting, even when the word “fake” is used.

  • Friday, October 30th • 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM
  • Firehouse Theatre, 1609 W. Broad Street
  • $8

3. Nightmare on Broad Street 3

Four events under one scary umbrella! Coalition Theatre hosts Vincent Price’s Late Night Horror Hotline, the 58th Annual Murder-Free Costume Ball, Troll 2 Party, and Slasher! The Improv Horror Show. I will go to any ball that advertises itself as “murder-free.” Because if they don’t, well, you’re under no guarantees. And if you got murdered at a ball you’re unlucky to be able to stay after for a showing of what’s rumored to be the worst movie of all time!

  • Thursday, October 19th, Friday, October 30th and Saturday, October 31st • 8:00 PM (10:00 PM is the Troll 2 Party)
  • Coalition Theatre, 8 W. Broad Street
  • See site for ticket prices!

4. Fire, Flour & Fork

We’re giving away two tickets to Fire, Flour & Fork’s Tasting Tent for this Saturday, but even if you don’t win, you should consider getting tickets to some of the other events going on. They are many, varied, and cool. That link will also deliver you a curated guide for each foodie-personality type, courtesy of Stephanie Ganz, who is heavily involved with the FFF setup. Thanks, Stephanie! Thanks, Fire! Thanks, Flour! Thanks, Fork!

5. Hardywood Trickery Release Party, feat. Los Ramones and Full Moon Fever

My favorite Richmond band, Full Moon Fever, comes out in full force to do their last (not really) dance with Mary Jane, along with Los Ramónes, the “Spanglish” Ramones cover band. Guys, what will they all dress up as? Will you even care, soused as you are with the new stout that tastes like apple brandy, warm caramel, blackstrap molasses, and chocolate-covered cherries??

  • Saturday, October 31st • 8:00 PM (beer available beginning at 2:00 PM, ya lush)
  • Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, 2408 Ownby Lane
  • Free to attend!
