5 Things for Teens: Poetry, poetry, chalk art, performances, nature, and more nature

They say that Mother Nature never goes out of style. Which is to say, that she is supposed to look really pretty this weekend. Which is to say, that you should hang out with her.

1. Writing Workshop and Open Mic

For many people, including myself, writing poetry is a huge part of our lives. If it is a huge part of your life, or you just love spoken word or even creative writing, then feel free to come to this free writing workshop and open mic led by Maurice Jackson of the PhotoSynthesizers. There will be other writing workshops in the future, but I highly recommend attending this one.

  • Friday, March 25th • 4:00 – 8:00 PM
  • ATLAS art gallery, 114 W. Marshall Street
  • Free!

2. Poetry Night

Another cool thing about poetry is that a lot of people participate in it. So, if you can’t make it to the other open mic at ATLAS, you’ve got another chance. This time, in Southside, and it also comes highly recommended.

  • Friday, March 25th • 7:00 9:00 PM
  • Cafe Zata, 5947 Forest Hill Avenue
  • Free!

3. [Chalk Art Story Swap Co-op]

Due to the overwhelming support that its first iteration received, the Chalk Art Story Swap Co-op is happening again, this time at Jefferson Park, which is conveniently located near Alamo BBQ. So after spreading positivity to those around you, feel free to grab some barbecue afterwards for lunch.

  • Saturday, March 26th • 11:00 – 1:00 PM
  • Jefferson Park, 2100 Jefferson Avenue
  • Free!

4. No BS Brass Band

I don’t think No BS needs an introduction. But if you don’t know, then you should just go and find out for yourself–if only to see if they really live up to their name.

  • Saturday, March 26th • 9:00 – 11:00 PM
  • The Broadberry, 2729 W Broad Street
  • $15

5. Go OUTSIDE!

When I was canoeing and camping last summer with some friends, we referred to Mother Nature as ” Mama Nae.” So, to say the least, It’s important to spend time with Mama this weekend.

  • Pretty much any day
  • Pretty much any place
  • Mother Nature is free for us all to use.

Bonus Thing: ART 180 After school art programs

Starting April 12th, ART 180 presents a new series of after school art programs, led by artists from the community at ATLAS (114 W. Marshall Street in Jackson Ward). Highly recommended programs and great, fun-loving people. If it isn’t clear enough how awesome the folks at ART !80 are; go and visit the gallery by appointment or whenever you’re free between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. For more information, click here art180.org or email Michael Guedri.
