1. Disney’s Newsies

If you can’t see the film version on the big screen, I suppose a live adaptation will do. And ok, fine, it would be pretty cool to see the one leg jump through dance move (seen at the 1:05 mark right here) happen right in front of your face. 2. 30th Annual Cheerleading Jamboree

Confession: 100 percent of my cheerleading knowledge comes from repeated viewings of Bring It On, and don’t you try to tell me this event won’t be anything like that I DON’T WANNA HEAR IT.

  • Richmond Coliseum, 601 E. Leigh Street
  • $8 for adults; $4 for kids 2 to 12; kids under 2 are free

3. Coats for Kids Ballpark Warming Party

Every November Puritan Cleaners makes it their business to give winter coats to local kids that need them. New or gently used coats (all kids sizes welcome) can be dropped off at Puritan Cleaners locations around town any time during the month of November–ORRRRR you can come by the Diamond on Saturday, donate a coat, enjoy free hot dogs, music, games, and activities for the kids. All visitors who donate a coat will be entered in a raffle for Flying Squirrels memorabilia and other sweet prizes.

4. Touch a Truck

This event was supposed to happen in October, but Joaquin had to blow into town and goof up everything–as Joaquins tend to do1. Anyway, you and yours will get the chance to see, touch, and safely explore the big trucks and machinery that make our city “go”: tractors, backhoes, ambulances, tractor trailers, utility trucks, and helicopters. Also: faceprinting, bounce houses, and Nutzy.

  • $5 ($15 family packs also available)

5. Stories at the Museum

This month the Virginia Historical Society’s fortnightly story time will focus on Native American Heritage. Enjoy an educator-led reading of Gerald McDermott’s Raven: A Trickster Tale from the Pacific Northwest2, followed by a make-it-take-it craft activity for the kids.
