1. In Gear: Richmond Cycles

We’ve got less than a month until the Big Bike Race™, so start getting hyped with this “uniquely-Valentine take on the history of cycling in Richmond from the 19th century to the present day.” I’m not sure what “uniquely-Valentine” means exactly, but since everything that museum does is fantastic, I’m pretty certain you and yours won’t be disappointed by this one.

• Tuesday through Saturday • 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM and Sundays • 12:00 – 5:00 PM (extended hours until 8:00 PM September 19th – 26th)

2. Stories at the Museum: Hispanic Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with an educator-led reading of Waiting for Biblioburro by Monica Brown. Kids will also get to complete a “make-it-take-it” craft.

3. Curious George Visits the Library

Yeah, yeah, yeah, the kids will love the puppets and stories and photo opps, but I’m concerned. Have the people behind this ever read a Curious George book? Are they aware of the potential havoc they are welcoming into their hallowed aisles? They know he once flooded a house, damaged priceless artifacts, and then somehow ended up going into space and earning a medal, right?

4. Music in the Park: Elana Lisa and the Hot Mess

Got the end-of-summertime blues? Spending an evening with the fam in Forest Hill Park listening to some jazz, swing, and (fittingly) blues is sure to cure what ails ya’.

5. Richmond Flying Squirrels vs. Reading Fightin’ Phils

Public school students go back on the 8th, so I encourage all parents to spend Labor Day helping their kids squeeze out every last metaphorical drop of summer. Or, to take it in another direction, tap your watch and bellow, “ENJOY IT WHILE YOU CAN, YOUNGSTERS” each time you catch them having a good time. The Squirrels’ final game of the regular season is the perfect place to do either of these things.
