5 Things for Families

So long, Big Bike Race™, and thanks for all the ennui. Here are five things that sound pretty fun. I guess.

1. Richmond Writers Series: Noah Scalin

Enjoy an “interactive evening of creativity, fun, and suspense” with Noah Scalin, the creator of the Skull-A-Day project and its accompanying book.

2. Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day

It doesn’t have to be over, guys! People in Richmond are doing their own bike stuff, too! Kids of all ages and biking abilities (and their parents) are invited to spend time International Mountain Biking Associated1 certified ride instructors to work through games and exercises that will help build skills needed to tackle trails on two wheels. Each participant needs a properly working bicycle, a helmet, and water (and non-adults need to bring a guardian). This also coincides nicely with this weekend’s opening of the Capital Trail! Once you’re finished roughing it, get on the little road and take a nice, smooth ride.

3. Digging for Dinos

Hurry up and let your kids see that paleontology super is cool before they accidentally watch an episode of Friends and learn about Ross Geller2 and lose all interest in STEM foreverrrrrrrrrrr.

4. 10th Annual Touch a Truck

Update: Toch a Truck has been rescheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2015.

Or, as I like to call it, “10th Annual Day of Richmond Kids Losing Their Damn Minds.” Kids will get the chance to see, touch, and safely explore the big trucks and machinery that make our city “go”: tractors, backhoes, ambulances, tractor trailers, utility trucks, and helicopters. Also: faceprinting, bounce houses, and Nutzy.

5. The Frog Bride

David Gonzalez offers a fun adaptation of the Russian tale of a king who sends his three sons to find their brides. Two return with beautiful ladies, and the third returns with…a frog. Gonzalez’s storytelling skills, the original jazz-funk score, and the moving backdrop of images by Wassily Kandinsky are sure to leave your children “ribbit-ed.”3 Be sure to stick around after for a Q and A with Mr. Gonzalez.
