5 Things for Families: Crabby, bikey, watery, tasty, anything but cutesy

This weekend involves things all Richmonders are required to love: bikes, stuff from Hanover, the river, rocking/rolling, and organic food. Wow, we sound kind of insufferable. Except for the Hanover part. That place is pretty adorable.

1. Balance in Motion: The Evolution of Cycling in America

Curated by Richmond historian and cycling authority Jesse McCauley, this exhibit explores how bicycles helped–and still help!–shape life in America. This looks to me like yet another great way to get your kids (and all those grumbling about road closures and whatnot) stoked for The Big Bike Race™ coming in September.

  • Tuesdays through Friday • 10:00 AM-5:00 PM and Saturdays and Sundays • 1:00-5:00 PM (exhibit closes October 18th)
  • The Branch Museum of Architecture and Design, 2501 Monument Avenue
  • Free!

2. Hanover Firefighters Crab Feast

There are only a few tickets left for the 24th installment of this event, but it’s worth a try. Spend the afternoon enjoying all the crabs, hot dogs, and beverages (adult and non-) you can cram into your belly. As you appreciate some of Hanover’s biggest heroes, of course.

  • Saturday, August 15th • 1:00-8:00 PM
  • Cold Harbor Ruritan Park, 8131 Walnut Grove Road
  • $35 (but that covers parking, food, and drinks–and kids 5 and and under are free with a paying adult!)

3. James River: Young Eyes

Children (and their parents) are invited to join the folks from Art Works on the flood wall in Manchester to create original paintings of the James River. Finished works will be exhibited in the Skylight Gallery at Art Works August 28th through September 20th. The group will meet at Art Works and then head over together.

  • Saturday, August 15th &bulll; 10:00 AM-12:00 PM
  • Art Works, 320 Hull Street Road
  • $5 donation requested to cover the cost of a canvas (paints and brushes provided)

4. Girls Rock! RVA 5th Annual Camper Showcase

Come see what the volunteers and campers at Girls Rock! 2015 have been up to. The campers (all ages 8 to 15) will perform the songs they spent all week writing and rehearsing. Bring a picnic lunch! A rockin’ one!

  • Saturday, August 15th • 12:00-3:00 PM
  • Library Park at Main Library, 101 E. Franklin Street
  • Free!

5. Tasting: Nettie’s Naturally

Stop by the Northside’s best little market and sample some goodies from Nettie’s Naturally, Richmond’s own organic, gluten-free, eco-friendly bakery. Apparently Nettie’s makes “famous beet brownies.” I’m dubious (because beets taste like dirt, guys, I don’t care what you say), but I’m willing to check it out. You should, too!

  • Sunday, August 16th • 10:00 AM-12:00 PM
  • Little House Green Grocery, 1227 Bellevue Avenue
  • Free!
