5 Things for Families

An excellent selection of family-friendly events this weekend, I must say. And one of them involves a blue, guitar-playing cat.

1. Pete the Cat

Sure, Pete the Cat’s books are fun and funny, but let’s not forget their common thread: “Life happens, but you don’t need to freak the eff out, kids.” If you’re not familiar with everyone’s favorite blue cat and his “It’s all good” message, check out this video–and then plan to be at Chesterfield County’s Central Library for story time, crafts, and a visit from Pete himself. Those of you who are already clued into this guy’s magical ways have already added this to your gcal, I’m sure.

2. The Adventure to the Imagi Nation Family Show

Magician David London “utilizes magic, storytelling, and interactive play to take children of all ages on a journey to the Imagi Nation…” Recommended for kids ages 5 to 11–and their fun-loving parents, of course.

3. Richmond Symphony Union LolliPops: Pinocchio’s Adventures in Funland

Renowned narrator and singer Charlotte Blake Alston will guide you through the classic tale of Pinnochio, with the help of the Richmond Symphony. Be sure to come early for the pre-concert festival, including the instrument “petting zoo.”

4. Be a Noble Kid

Like I always say, “No weekend is complete without a little do-gooding.” OK, I’ve actually never uttered those words, but I’m going to start–because it’s true! Drop off items to be donated to Hilliard House–a local program assisting homeless women and their children–and enjoy some hot chocolate or cider before you go. Needed items include pillows (new); twin mattress pads, sheets, and blankets; laundry, dish, and hand soap; flashlights and batteries; and gift cards to stores like Target and Walmart.

5. Schoolhouse Rock Live!

Will someone be dressed as a Bill? Please? The show starts at 3:00 PM, but kids are welcome to take part in some pre-show karaoke start at 1:30 PM. Stick around after the show for a Q&A with the cast.
