5 Things for Families

Something is happening tomorrow…shoot…what was it? Welp, anyhoo, here are some things to keep you and the fam busy over the next few days. You know, if you aren’t doing anything.

1. Bizarre Holiday Market

OK, all you Last Minute Louies. Richmond’s handmade holiday heroes will be around until this evening to save your procrastinating patooties. 

• Wednesday, December 24th • 10:00 AM — 7:00 PM
• Chop Suey Books, 2913 W. Cary Street
• Free admission

2. Illuminate Light Show & Santa’s Village

Take the fam for a drive through Meadow Event Park and feast your eyes on hundreds of thousands of LED lights synchronized to music from your car radio. End your evening–that is, if the kids haven’t a) fallen asleep during the drive or b) lost their damn minds from so much stimuli–stop by Santa’s village for food and children’s activities. FYI: The Big Man will not be at Santa’s village tonight–after all, he’s got things to do!

• Runs through Saturday, January 3rd • 5:30 — 10:00 PM nightly (including holidays)
• Meadow Event Park, Exit 98 off of I-95
• $20-$25 per carload (up to 9 passengers)

3. Fruitcake Science

Poor fruitcake. Why does everyone hate it so? Well, this event won’t answer that question, but it will shows you what happens when the world’s most detested holiday “treat” is subjected to blowtorches, liquid nitrogen, and electric currents. Because when you hate something, experiment on it! I guess?

• Friday, December 26th through Tuesday, December 30th • 9:30 AM — 5:00 PM (demonstrations take place throughout the day)
• Science Museum of Virginia, 2500 W. Broad Street
• Free with admission

4. Capital City Kwanzaa Festival

Confession: my six-year-old schooled me yesterday on the history and traditions of Kwanzaa, so I feel like I can’t not go to this. Presented by Elegba Folklore Society, this event will include performances, workshops, kids activities, and food all focused on observing the year-end’s Kwanzaa holiday, “a cultural affirmation of values, thanksgiving and growth.” 

• Saturday, December 27th • 1:00 — 9:00 PM
• Altria Theater, 6 N. Laurel Street
• $5-$7 (kids under 12 are free)

5. Sensory-Friendly Screening: Polar Express

Enjoy a sensory-friendly (lights up, sounds down) screening of what I think we can safely call a holiday classic now: The Polar Express. Those with special dietary needs are welcome to bring their own refreshments.
