5 Things for Families
You’re going to spend Labor Day weekend scrambling to get the kids ready for school, so best soak up those last bits of summer while you can.
1. Who’s Awake? A Family Night Hike
We’ve all seen the goats, the chickens, the hawks, and what not, but what about Maymont’s residents that prefer to save their fun for when the sun goes down? Learn about their nocturnal adaptations through games, experiments, and a hike through the grounds. Maybe you’ll even see that dang bobcat who I’m starting to think doesn’t actually exist.

2. Moon Bounce Mania
As if the Children’s Museum isn’t already awesome enough, they go and add moon bounces.

- CMoR–Central, 2626 W. Broad Street
- Free with admission ($8; free for members and kids under one)
3. Butterflies at Bryan Park
Spend the morning learning about our native butterflies and find out what you can do to make those winged beauties feel at home in your own backyard.

4. Richmond Bluegrass Festival
Bluegrass, beers, and…man, I wish food had a synonym that started with a “b”. Anyway, all of these things together make for a nice way to spend one of the last Saturdays of the summer. The Hot Seats, Long Branch Ramblers, The Green Boys, River City Band, and Sturgeon City are scheduled to perform. Participating food trucks include Carytown Burgers & Fries, Gelati Celesti, and Olio.

5. One-Man Family Circus
So there’s this guy named Paolo Garbanzo (like the bean, I guess?) who is an international award-winning arm wrestler, juggler, and jester.1 And he’s going to be here! In Richmond! Doing his thing(s) to help raise money for The Byrd Theatre Foundation! I suggest you not pass up a chance to see such a Renaissance man at work.
