5 Things for Families

Do something inspiring and creative this weekend! Or, be awed by my most impressive endeavor to date: I culled a list of things to do in and around Richmond that doesn’t involve food trucks.

Do something inspiring and creative this weekend. Appreciate the talent of local kids and their mentors, take advantage of the programs available at the library, make your own art with Legos, or enjoy classic pop music that has inspired almost everything that came after it. Or, be awed by my most impressive endeavor to date: I culled a list of things to do in and around Richmond that doesn’t involve food trucks. Where do I pick up my journalism award?

1. Art 180 Mural Unveiling

Art 180’s newest mural, on the side of the ROSMY building, makes its debut today. RSVP (ASAP!) to view the project, led by Chris Milk Hulbert and Julie Elkins, which celebrates LGBTQ youth and was created by young Richmond artists. Food, drinks, and music will accompany the event. Chris Milk will be selling artwork, with proceeds going to Art 180.

  • Wednesday, July 24th, 6:00 PM
  • ROSMY, 2311 Westwood Avenue
  • Free

2. Beatlemania at Short Pump Town Center

Since the chance to see the Beatles live ended decades ago, head out to the Short Pump Concert series and enjoy the third best thing: A Beatles Tribute band (the second best thing is, obviously, Oasis, and I have hopes that they will reunite soon and maybe play Short Pump, too).

  • Thursday, July 25th, 6:00 – 8:00 PM
  • Short Pump Town Center, 11800 W. Broad Street
  • Free

3. & 4. Workshops at Richmond Public Libraries

For those of you who thought the library was just for lending books and movies or making a copy real quick before a job interview: get a hat, and then hold onto it, because the Richmond Public Library offers a diverse number of events that go beyond story time. A few coming up include Container Gardening for Teens, led by horticulturist Marlene Sehen, and two workshops from the iPower DJ series, where local DJs talk about their careers and the music business. Power 92.1’s Swirv Dinero and TT Torez are featured in the upcoming week’s workshops. Call or visit to reserve a spot in these or any other workshops. Check out the website for a schedule by day or location.

5. Lego Architecture Event

The Lego Architecture series features models of real landmarks made with fancy Legos. Stepping on a Duplo block hurts, but stepping on the Sydney Opera House could do some actual damage. The Lego Architecture Studio hosts an event at Barnes and Noble, geared towards teens and adults, to include a discussion on design and a chance to build with special Legos from the series.

  • Saturday, July 27th, 1:30 PM
  • Barnes and Noble, Chesterfield Towne Center, 11500 Midlothian Turnpike
  • Free

If you’re into the Beatles enough to venture alllllll the way out to Short Pump to see a cover band, you should definitely put a 1964 The Tribute show on your List of Awesome Things to Do Sometime in the Future. Those dudes are super legit.
