Three day weekend, y’all! Come Tuesday, the kids will be back in school, and before you know we’ll be complaining about how cold it is. We best be doing it up right. So here we go: 5 things to help you say adios to summer.

Three day weekend, y’all! Come Tuesday, the kids will be back in school, and before you know we’ll be complaining about how cold it is. We best be doing it up right. So here we go: 5 things to help you say adios to summer.

1. First Fridays

First Fridays Artwalk will be kicking off its 10th (!!!) season with a soft opening this week, so please do your Very Richmond duty and head on down to Broad Street to see what they’ve got lined up. Plus, this is the first First Fridays since VCU started class again, so it will give you a good chance to play a game of “Spot the Freshmen.”

2. Cinema Classics: Ben-Hur

Because nothing says Labor Day weekend like spending almost four hours watching Charlton Heston gnash his teeth a lot. Also: chariot race! Talk about an iconic scene from American cinema. I would post it here, but that would kind of defeat the purpose of suggesting you go see it.

  • Friday, September 3 (7pm) and Saturday, September 4 (2pm and 7pm)
  • Henrico Theatre (305 East 9 Mile Road)
  • $1

3. 5th Annual Harvest Wine Festival

James River Cellars welcomes three guest wineries to celebrate the fall harvest… and you get to come, too! Do a little tasting, listen to live music, attend wine seminars, take a tour, and browse through goodies from local crafters. Richmond’s SPCA will also be there collecting pet food — bring in a can or a bag and be entered to win a prize from one of the vendors at the event.

  • Saturday, September 4 (noon to 5pm)
  • James River Cellars (11008 Washington Highway)
  • $12 in advance, $15 at the door

4. Tears for Fears

Shout! Shout! Let it all out. These are the things I can do without. Come on, I’m talking to you, come on. (Now you have something to have in your head until you go to the show.)

  • Sunday, September 5 (8pm)
  • The National (708 E. Broad Street)
  • $42.50

5. Flying Squirrels Season Closer (vs. The Hated Bowie Baysox)

I… I can’t believe it’s over. I don’t think I’m alone in saying that I’ll be walking around with a Nutzy-size hole in my heart until next spring.

  • Monday, September 6 (12:05pm) — but if you want to catch the fireworks, you’ll need to hit the Friday game at 7:05pm or the Sunday night game at 5:05pm.
  • The Diamond
  • $6 to $10

None of these sound good? Check out our Events Calendar for more fun stuff going on around town.

As always, if you know of something that deserves a shout out, please do so in the comments OR submit it to the calendar yourself!

And just for kicks, tell us what you’re planning to do this weekend. Will you be stopping by any of these shin-digs or do you have other excellent plans?
