The weekend is almost here. Time to go do some stuff! Here are 5 things that will hopefully inspire to get you out and about in the good ol’ RVA…

1. DEVO

I wonder how many of the concert attendees will be wearing the hats. I’m sorry, I wonder how many of the concert attendees will be wearing the “Energy Domes.” Let’s watch this now:

  • Friday, July 30 (8pm)
  • The National (708 E. Broad Street)
  • $35 in advance; $40 day of

2. Spies! Family Fun Day

Hear tales of famous Civil War spies, make your own decoder, and write a message in invisible ink. The kids can join in, too!

  • Saturday, July 31 (10am to 4pm)
  • The Museum of the Confederacy (1201 E. Clay Street)
  • Free with museum admission ($12 for adults; $11 for seniors; $7 for kids; free active military and kids under 7)

3. Movies & Mimosas: Jurassic Park

Yeah, yeah, yeah, we featured Movies & Mimosas last week, but the opportunity to see this one on the big screen (again or for the first time) is too good to pass up. Also, try not to be at least a little in love with Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm. JUST TRY.

  • Saturday, July 31 and Sunday, August 1 (doors open at 10:30am, movie starts at 11am)
  • Movieland (1301 N. Boulevard)
  • $5.50 ($4.50 with your Criterion Club Card)

4. 21st Annual Big Brothers Big Sisters Duck Race

This event is older than two of our interns. Anyway, stop by Brown’s Island to see 20,000 rubber duckies dramatically dropped into the Haxall Canal where they will then engage in an aquatic battle of speed and spirit! Or drift pleasantly towards the finish line. You know, whatevs. Should your duck be the first one to cross the finish line, you will win… A NEW CAR (a Prius, courtesy of McGeorge Toyota). Kids activities, entertainment, and food will also be available for your general, fun-having needs.

  • Saturday, July 31 (11am to 4pm)
  • Brown’s Island (S. 7th Street)
  • Free admission to the event; duck prices vary (with proceeds going to Big Brothers Big Sisters)

5. Gone to the Birds

The birds are back! Bring the whole fam downtown and see thousands of Purple Martins swoop in to roost in the Bradford Pear trees next to the Farmers’ Market before they continue their migration to Brazil. Stick around to enjoy some purple gelato or take advantage of food and drink specials available at nearby restaurants. (Purple Martini, anyone?)

  • Saturday, July 31 (6pm to 9pm)
  • 17th Street Farmers’ Market
  • Free!

None of these sound good? Check out our Events Calendar for more fun stuff going on around town.

As always, if you know of something that deserves a shout out, please do so in the comments OR submit it to the calendar yourself!
