A little bird tells me that temperatures will be approaching 60 degrees this weekend. Once you’ve dried your tears of happiness, take a look at the most delightfully hodgepodgiest (it’s a word… now) Richmond weekend ever!

1. Tea Time: A Gracious Interlude of Victorian Life

This new exhibit at Maymont gives you a glimpse of the Victorian tradition of afternoon tea, including displays of period tea-sets and clothing. That sound you just heard was Tess fainting from excitement.

  • Opens Thursday, March 4 at noon and runs through May 23
  • Maymont (2201 Shields Lake Drive)
  • $5 donation suggested

2. Richmond Noir at New York Deli

It just so happens I have a copy of this book sitting right on my desk. In all honesty, I haven’t read (all of it) yet, but it’s still there, so I like to think I’m supporting this great effort by osmosis. Sure. Anyway, the short of it is after the success of their 2004 release Brooklyn Noir, Akashic Books has embarked upon creating a series of noir anthologies, each one set in a distinct neighborhood or location within the city of the book — and Richmond is one of them. Chop Suey has organized a meet-and-greet with the editors and contributors of the RVA installment… which, I must tell you, opens with a quote from Tom Wolfe: “Just think of all the people not fortunate enough to be born in Richmond, Va.”

  • Thursday, March 4, 8pm
  • New York Deli (2920 W. Cary Street)
  • Free!

3. CAA Tournament

I won’t pretend to know anything about this. I *do* know, however, that we will be providing coverage (via words and via Scott’s CAA 2010 basketball tournament bracket, AKA The Best Thing We Run All Year) all weekend long. Games run all weekend long, so here’s the sched:

4. 34th Annual Richmond Home & Garden Show

Sure, sure they’ll have all kinds of great vendors to help you snazz up your digs, BUT try these on for size: 1) the first 200 people each day get a free pansy AND 2) Matt Paxton of A&E’s Hoarders will be there!!!!

  • Friday, March 5 (noon to 9pm), Saturday, March 6 (10am to 8pm), and Sunday, March 7 (11am to 5pm)
  • $8 (16 and under are free)

5. Henry Rollins: Frequent Flyer Tour

Sure, he’s best known for being the lead singer of Black Flag, but Henry Rollins is one well-rounded dude: radio, movies, books, you name it. Now on a spoken-word tour, Mr. Rollins will be making a stop in Richmond to share his witty commentary on what’s going on in the world. Here’s a preview for you. It’s about mullets.

  • Sunday, March 7, 7pm
  • The National (708 E. Broad Street)
  • $20 (tickets can be purchased online)

If none of these look particularly compelling (although I can’t imagine why), perhaps I can interest you in our Events Calendar for more ideas?

And as usual, if you’d like to give special shout-outs to happenings this weekend, leave them in the comments!

(Don’t forget: If you’ve got an event in the works that you’d like to see featured, send it our way.)

  1. I just want to say that Henry Rollins was in the best movie of all time: The Chase.
