5 things

Just like our last go-around, this weekend is jam-packed with things to do. It’s like RIchmond has finally managed to shake off the snow-induced crabbies and get its act together. And we should all partake in the goodness!

Just like our last go-around, this weekend is jam-packed with things to do. It’s like Richmond has finally managed to shake off the snow-induced crabbies and get its act together. And we should all partake in the goodness!

1. Crumble (Lay Me Down, Justin Timberlake)

This one sounds so good that even *I* would consider abandoning my evenings spent watching Gilmore Girls reruns to go out and catch a performance. Crumble tells the story of 11-year-old Janice who has recently lost her father and whose mother thinks baking (and dreaming of Harrison Ford) is the key to healing. Meanwhile, Janice spends her time thinking about Justin Timberlake (understood) and compiling “a very strange, very explosive Christmas-wish list.” How can you resist?

  • Opens Thursday, February 25 at 8pm and runs through March 20
  • Firehouse Theatre (1609 W. Broad Street)
  • $25, $10 with student ID

2. 2010 Shimano North American Handmade Bicycle Show

Bikes? Handmade bikes? Richmonders, this event was made for you! I even hear tell that folks who make bikes out of bamboo will be there.

  • Friday, February 26 through Sunday, February 28
  • Greater Richmond Convention Center (403 N. 3rd Street)
  • 1 day, $20 at the door; 2 days, $36 at the door; 3 days, $50 at the door

(And be sure to check out our coverage of this one early next week.)

3. Marathon Bluegrass Jam

I am a fan of marathons — particularly those that don’t involve running and DO involve barbecue and bluegrass music, all to benefit a good cause. In this particular case you’ll be helping to support the Fisher House, an organization that houses families of American soldiers recuperating at McGuire Veterans Hospital.

  • Saturday, February 27, noon until midnight
  • Grandpa Eddie’s BBQ (11129 Three Chopt Road)
  • Donate your money or your music. 100% of proceeds benefit the Fisher House.

4. Movies & Mimosas: Sixteen Candles

I swear, I am not paid to feature Movies & Mimosas so much. But, hey, if you don’t like it, maybe you should call Movieland and tell them to stop being so DAMN AWESOME.

Ahem.

So! Yes! Sixteen Candles! What with the somewhat recent-ish passing of John Hughes, this is sure to draw a large, enthusiastic crowd.

  • Saturday, February 27 and Sunday, February 28 at 10:30am (movie starts at 11am)
  • Movieland (1301 N. Boulevard)
  • $5.50 ($4.50 with Criterion Club card), drinks cost extra

5. Virginia Independent Film Festival

Picture it: an afternoon spent watching a series of independent features, shorts, and documentaries from Virginian filmmakers, followed by Q&A’s and voting for the best films. My geek-brain just exploded.

  • Sunday, February 28 at 1pm
  • Byrd Theatre (2908 W. Cary Street)
  • Documentaries $5; Shorts $5; Features $5; All Day Pass $10; Students $2 in any session (with ID)

If none of these look particularly compelling (although I can’t imagine why), perhaps I can interest you in our Events Calendar for more ideas?

And as usual, if you’d like to give special shout-outs to happenings this weekend, leave them in the comments!

(Don’t forget: If you’ve got an event in the works that you’d like to see featured, send it our way.)

  1. Marathon Bluegrass Jam!

Go to this. George Winn will be there and he rules! An old fella from the roots of bluegrass. He used to play at Poe’s Pub regularly and it was nothing short of fantastic every time.
