5 things

Valentine’s Day is on Sunday. I’m sure there are some of you who are very excited about this, some who couldn’t care less, and others who want to cut me for merely mentioning it. I tried to cater to all of you. So, pick your poison…

Valentine’s Day is on Sunday. I’m sure there are some of you who are very excited about this, some who couldn’t care less, and others who want to cut me for merely mentioning it. I tried to cater to all of you. So, pick your poison…

1. Valentine’s Weekend at Balliceaux

I had to call it that because, jeez louise, they’ve got a lot planned. The ladies of the all female DJ collective Cherry Bomb will be hosting a Sadie Hawkins dance on Thursday (9:30pm), David Schultz and the Skyline, The Great White Jenkins, and Pepi Ginsberg will be popping by on Friday (11:30pm), and the Soul Power will be spinning some great tunes on Saturday (11:30pm). 203 N. Lombardy Street, totally and completely free (but for ages 21 and up only).

2. The Grapes of Wrath

Because nothing says “I love you” like an evening spent watching the story of a Depression-era family fleeing the Dust Bowl to seek out a better life in California. Whatevs, it’s a great story. Opens Friday, February 12 at 8pm (runs through March 21), Barksdale at Willow Lawn (1601 Willow Lawn Drive), $39 (discounts available for seniors and groups).

3. Corey Smith

I know that a significant portion of Richmond’s population are pretty stoked about this guy coming to town, mostly so they can sing along with this song and openly mourn the end of their college days:

Saturday, February 13, 8pm, The National (708 E. Broad Street), $15.

4. Movies & Mimosas: Dirty Dancing

Dudes. I guarantee that if you suggest to your girlfriend/wife/etc. that you go see this movie together… well, I’m too much of a lady to elaborate further. Plus, can we talk about the part at the end when The Swayze (awww, RIP) jumps off the stage and then does that snapping thing? GAWD. Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14, 10:30, Movieland (1301 N. Boulevard), $5.50 general admission, $4.50 with your Criterion Club card. Mimosas cost extra.

5. Valentine’s Day at the Valentine

Ok, they aren’t doing any Valentine’s Day specific things, but this just seems so perfect. Plus, the second Sunday of each month (i.e. *this* Sunday) is “Pay What You Can” admission. So stop by and get a little learning on with your sweetie as you take in awesome exhibits like Waste Not Want Not: Richmond’s Great Depression, 1929-1941 and Please Enjoy the Show: Images of Richmond Theater. Sunday, February 14, The Valentine Richmond History Center (1015 E. Clay Street), 12pm to 5pm, pay what you can (but don’t be too stingy).

If none of these look particularly compelling (although I can’t imagine why), perhaps I can interest you in our Events Calendar for more ideas? And if you’re looking for more lovey dovey-ish events, stop by our Valentine’s Day Guide.

As usual, if you’d like to give special shout-outs to happenings this weekend, leave them in the comments!

(Don’t forget: If you’ve got an event in the works that you’d like to see featured, send it our way.)
