5 things

We all know what is supposed to happen this weekend. Let’s just not talk about it, k? Here are five great things you can do to keep yourself busy… should you actually be able to get out of the house.

We all know what is supposed to happen this weekend. Let’s just not talk about it, k? Here are five great things you can do to keep yourself busy… should you actually be able to get out of the house.

1. Generation Dream 2010

If you didn’t get a chance to properly celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. last week, here’s your chance. Join the Richmond Youth Peace Project for an “educoncert” featuring vocal and instrumental music, dance, and spoken word performances from some of our most talented local kids. Thursday, January 28, 7pm, VCU Singleton Center for the Performing Arts (922 Park Avenue), $5 suggested donation.

2. 2012 at The Byrd

Wait, just hear me out. Ok, I know no one wants to pay $10 to see a movie a like this. But $2? On a Thursday? Why the hell not? Plus who doesn’t love The Cuse?!?! Thursday, January 28, 7:15pm, Byrd Theatre (2908 W. Cary Street), $2.

3. Song of Mulan

It just occurred to me that the majority of the kids who will go see this show weren’t even alive when the movie came out. Maybe that’s a good thing as *this* Mulan is based on the original Chinese folk poem. But really, this is just a great family/cultural-ish/girls rule kind of event. Opens Friday, January 29 (runs through February 14), 7pm, Empire Theatre (114 W. Broad Street), $22 for adults, $21 for students and seniors, $18 for kids. Purchase tickets (and see all show dates and times) here.

4. Super Cornhole Tournament

I am the least competitive person on God’s green Earth. But I LOVE competitive people. I bet you there are going to be some inTENSE people at this one, especially considering there’s a $1,000 cash prize. Plus, I mean, bean bags, brackets, and beverages. Hard to go wrong there. Saturday, 11am, Hat Factory (140 Virginia Street), free to watch but there is a fee to enter. Stop by richmondcornhole.com (which is apparently “Virginia’s source for all things cornhole”) for details and to register your team.

5. Richmond Symphony: Genworth Symphony Pops – Simply Sinatra

Old Blue Eyes! Ok, not really him, but this little gem is more than qualified to give you a Sinatra fix (which, let’s be honest, we all need now and then). Treat yourself to a Manhattan or Martini after the show and consider yourself part of the Rat Pack. Saturday, January 30, 7pm, Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage (600 E. Grace Street), $17-$75. Purchase tickets here.

If none of these are to your liking, be sure to check out our Events Calendar for more ideas.

And as usual, if you’d like to give special shout-outs to happenings this weekend, leave them in the comments!

(Don’t forget: If you’ve got an event in the works that you’d like to see featured, send it our way.)
