While today’s image does relate to one of our picks, I was mostly hoping it would distract you from this weekend’s forecast. Maybe these super-fun events will help as well. AND, we’ve got a giveaway!

While today’s image does relate to one of our picks, I was mostly hoping it would distract you from this weekend’s forecast. Maybe these super-fun events will help as well. AND, we’ve got a giveaway!

1. GardenFest for Fidos

Thursdays looks to be the warmest day we’re gonna get for a while (the temps are expected to hit a balmy 40 degrees), so I suggest you and your four-legged friends head out and enjoy some fresh air (and the lights at Lewis Ginter) while you can. Leashes please! Thursday, January 7, 5pm, 1800 Lakeside Avenue, $10. A $2 donation to the SPCA for pet admission is appreciated.

2. Say Love: An Exhibition of Love and Hate

Not sure where to start at this month’s First Fridays Artwalk? Pop in to Gallery5 and catch the opening of Say Love, an exhibition celebrating the triumphs and struggles of the LGBT community. Friday’s opening reception will include performances by Nude Photos of Celebrities and more. Friday, January 8 (runs all month), 7pm, 200 W. Marshall Street, free.

3. Movies & Mimosas: Gone With the Wind

Ok, I know I featured this weekly Movieland event last time, but this is The Big One. Back when the theater first opened, Gone With the Wind was supposed to be one of the first films shown at Movies & Mimosas, but it fell through for some reason. This weekend, however, you’ll finally get to cozy up with your fellow Richmonders and watch Scarlett O’Hara do her thang on the big screen. Dress comfortably as the film almost hits the 4-hour mark. Saturday, January 9 and Sunday, January 10, 11am, 1301. No Boulevard, $5.50 ($4.50 with your Criterion Club card). Mimosas cost extra. Doors open at 10:30am.

4. Richmond Forum: Greg Mortenson

Well this is an amazing story. So back in in 1993, Greg Mortenson tried to climb the highest peak in Pakistan. Unable to make it, he was taken in and cared for by residents of a local village. He promised to repay their kindness by returning to their village to build a school (despite the fact that he would be sleeping in his car upon his return to the States). To date, he has built over 60 schools in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. This weekend he’ll be sharing his story (made famous in his book Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace…One School at a Time) with Richmonders a the Landmark. Saturday, January 9, 8pm, 601 N. Laurel Street, $36-$70. Purchase tickets here.

5. Richmond Varietease presents “The Nearly Naked New Year” burlesque show

This should heat things up a bit. Varietease producers Boo Boo Darlin’ and Dolli Holiday will be joined at the Canal Club by New Jersey’s burlesque beauty Philly Caramel and The Unkillable Kilian, The Dashing Patchwork Man who is known for stapling things to himself. You’ll also get a chance to meet Miss Kiki Von Kitsch, Richmond’s hottest up-and-coming burlesque star. Saturday, January 9, 9pm, 1545 E. Cary Street, $10. 21 and up.

And here’s your giveaway! Enter to win a pair of tickets to the Varietease show here. The contest closes at 10pm today, so get shaking!

If none of these are to your liking, be sure to check out our Events Calendar for more ideas.

And as usual, if you’d like to give special shout-outs to happenings this weekend, leave them in the comments!

(Don’t forget: If you’ve got an event in the works that you’d like to see featured, send it our way.)
