5 things

It’s almost 2010. I’m still holding out hope that my flying car will be waiting in my yard when I wake up tomorrow morning. Until then, here are a few suggestions for what to do this weekend as we bid goodbye to 2009 and ring in the New Year.

It’s almost 2010. I’m still holding out hope that my flying car will be waiting in my yard when I wake up tomorrow morning. Until then, here are a few suggestions for what to do this weekend as we bid goodbye to 2009 and ring in the New Year.

1. Children’s Museum New Year’s Eve Toast with Seymour

Before you leave the kids with Grandma for the evening, let them be part of the festivities. Not only will they have a little Radio Disney fun, they’ll also get to have an apple juice toast with Seymour. That’s so cute I might die. Thursday, December 31, 10am to 1pm, 2626 W. Broad Street, regular admission ($8, free for kids under 1).

2. New Year’s Eve at New York Deli

While there are tons of NYE’s events going around town (see more here), I picked this one because it lets us cling to that last little bit of the Carytown New Year’s Eve celebration. The owner was one of the driving forces behind that now defunct tradition and seems hell-bent on showing Richmonders a good time no matter what. Great food, DJ’s, a champagne toast, and lots of surprises are lined up. Thursday, December 31, 7pm, 2920 W. Cary Street.

3. Brunch at Can Can

What a fantastic way to start the year? For the first time ever, the folks at Can Can will be offering a New Year’s brunch. Doors open at 10am, but you might want to get there early — I have a feeling it will be bumping. Friday, January 1, 10am to 3pm, 3120 W. Cary Street.

4. Movies & Mimosas: The Wizard of Oz

I was expecting to be a bit let down by Movies & Mimosas after the stellar holiday line-up they scored, but those folks sure delivered. The Wizard of Oz on the big screen? I’ll be honest, the thought makes me tear up a bit. Saturday, January 2 and Sunday, January 3, 11am (doors open at 10:30am), 1301 N. Boulevard, $5.50 ($4.50 with your Criterion Club card).

5. Live at Ipanema: Josh Small

One of our favorite series on RVANews is off to a great start to the year with this one. Richmonders (and beyond) love Josh Small, and so should you. Sunday, January 3, 10pm, 917 W. Grace Street. And it’s free!

If none of these are to your liking, be sure to check out our Events Calendar for more ideas.

And as usual, if you’d like to give special shout-outs to happenings this weekend, leave them in the comments!

(Don’t forget: If you’ve got an event in the works that you’d like to see featured, send it our way.)
