5 things

It’s going to be rainy and in the 50s this weekend. I know, I know, but next week looks great. And luckily there are some lovely events going on over the next few days that will help get us through the summer-to-autumn transition. Oh, and we have a giveaway. See what we do for you?

It’s going to be rainy and in the 50s this weekend. I know, I know, but next week looks great. And luckily there are some lovely events going on over the next few days that will help get us through the summer-to-autumn transition. Oh, and we have a giveaway. See what we do for you?

1. Saks Key to the Cure (benefiting VCU Massey Cancer Center)

If you’re one who enjoys a little luxury but feels a bit guilty about the price tag that comes with it, this is the event for you: shopping at Saks, a fashion show, quality music, and good food, all to benefit women’s cancer research at VCU Massey Cancer Center. It’s a win on so many levels. Thursday, October 15th, 6pm, Stony Point Fashion Park, 9214 Stony Point Parkway, $75 in advance, $85 at the door. Purchase tickets here.

2. HandsOn Day 2009

What better way to fight these breezy, autumnal temperature than to engage in some warm fuzzy-inducing activities? Join your fellow Richmonders for HandsOn Day 2009, a city-wide effort to show RVA some love. There are still several service projects in need of volunteers, so stop by their website to take a look at your options. If you do end up taking part, make sure you tag your tweets and Flickr images with HOGR09 so they can be added to our ongoing coverage. Read more about that here. Saturday, October 17th, various times and locations. See website for details.

3. So You Think You Can Dance

I don’t watch the show, so I’m not going to pretend to know anything about it. But I *do* know that people from all walks of life lose their damn minds over it. And I can get behind anything that is referred to using a ridiculously long and stumbly acronym. Seriously, it takes me longer to say and type “SYTYCD” than it does to just use the full name of the show. Saturday, October 17th, 8pm, Richmond Coliseum, 601 E. Leigh Street. Ticket prices vary, so see website for details.

4. Bouncing Betties Burlesque presents Reveille!

Were you aware that there is a Pinup Angels’ Care Package Fund? Basically, this group of lovely ladies sell their photos to pay for care packages that are sent over to soldiers in Iraq. America, you are a great place. This weekend’s performance of Reveille by Bouncing Betties Burlesque will be benefiting this worthy cause. Saturday, October 17th, 8pm, Gallery 5, 200 W. Marshall Street, $15, $10 with Military ID or uniform (official or costume). But wait! We’ve got a pair of tickets up for grabs. Enter to win them here. Contest ends at 10pm TONIGHT.

5. Movies & Mimosas: Moonstruck

“Snap out of it!”
“Old man, you give those dogs another piece of my food, I’m gonna kick you ’til you’re dead.”
“I ain’t no freakin’ monument to justice!”

I could go on all day, but then that might ruin the movie for you. Trust, it’s good. Saturday, October 17th and Sunday, October 18th, 11am, 1301 N. Boulevard, $5.50 general admission, $4.50 for Criterion Club members.

None of these up your alley? See what else is going on around town this weekend.
