5 things

So, September happens next week. That’s weird. Even though summer isn’t officially over for a few weeks, it kind of feels like we need to get in our last hurrahs while we can. Luckily there are some truly, truly awesome things going on this weekend to help you do just that. And we’ve even got a couple free tickets to give away for one of them. Have a look-see…

1. Punch-Tin Lantern Workshop at 1708 Gallery

In preparation for the Community Lantern Parade that will kick of the festivities for InLight Richmond 2009, 1708 is hosting a series of lantern-making workshops over the next couple weeks. This one is being headed up by local sculptor Paul Teeples and was picked for 5 things mostly because of this phrase included on the event description: “Lantern making techniques will be based on Colonial Era Pinch-tin lanterns…” Colonial Era! An art workshop after my own heart. If someone will promise me that Paul Teeples will wear a tri-cornered hat while teaching, I’m so in. Thursday, August 27th, 6:30pm to 9:30pm, 319 West Broad Street, $25, for teens and adults (and everyone in between there, I’d imagine). Register here.

2. Scoot-In Movie: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Sure, other stories have bumped John Hughes’s passing from headlines, but it still stings a little bit over here. Luckily Scoot Richmond knows that mourning can take a while, and they are ready and willing to give you a time and place to honor the man behind our favorite teen comedies. Join your fellow Hughes fans for evening spent reminiscing over a nice dose of “Bueller… Bueller… Bueller” and say a proper goodbye. Friday, August 28th, 9pm, 217 West 7th Street, free!

3. Richmond Varietease presents “Soul Party” at The Canal Club

Take a look at names of the ladies involved in this show: Boo Boo Darlin’, Persephone Sweetbottom, and Magnolia Jackson Pickett Burnside. Having a bad time would be impossible. Plus, I mean, it’s a burlesque show, so there’s other “interesting” stuff going on. Makes me blush just THINKING about it. Saturday, August 29th, doors open at 8pm, show starts at 9pm, 1545 East Cary Street, $10. Ages 21 and older. OBVIOUSLY, because there are BUBBIES involved, or so I hear. We also happen to have two tickets ready to pass on to one lucky winner. Enter to win the tickets here. The contest closes at 10pm tonight.

4. Loosen My Tie premier at The Byrd Theatre

If you haven’t had a chance to read the piece we ran on this film yesterday, head on over and do so. And, I mean think about it: a documentary made by a Richmond filmmaker about a Richmond band premiering in one of Richmond’s favorite landmarks. All Richmonders who don’t go will be forced to turn in their RVA cards. Sunday, August 30th, 2pm, 2908 West Cary Street, $5.

5. Live at Ipanema: The Low Branches

I don’t know about you, but I’m an avid supporter of anything described as “shoegazing music.” But seriously, take a few minutes to listen to The Low Branches’ “Giant Sounds” demo. I think you’ll be sufficiently convinced to spend a Sunday evening with them. Particularly a Sunday evening that involves a cozy basement bar setting, some good drinks, and some good company. Sunday, August 30th, 10pm 917 West Grace Street, free!

None of these up your alley? See what else is going on around town this weekend.

Did we miss anything? Leave it in the comments.

(If you have an event coming up that you want help promoting, let us know. We’ll add it to the calendar AND it just might end up making this list!)
