5 things

Whatever you do, don’t go to Weather.com to see what it’s going to be like this weekend. Don’t do it. Just don’t. Instead, take a look at what you can be out doing this weekend… when your eyeballs aren’t melting out of your skull.

Whatever you do, don’t go to Weather.com to see what it’s going to be like this weekend. Don’t do it. Just don’t. Instead, take a look at what you can be out doing this weekend… when your eyeballs aren’t melting out of your skull.

1. My Prerogative: Old School Dance Party (featuring DJ Skruff and DJ Mordecai)

I’m hoping with everything that I am that everyone in attendance at this event yells “DANCE PART-AYYYYYYYYYY” all through the night. And not only does it promise some sweet jams from the 80s and 90s, it’s the perfect way to end an evening spent at First Fridays. Friday, August 7th, 10pm to 2am, Cous Cous (900 W. Franklin Street), no cover, 21 and up.

2. 2nd Annual Jonny Z Festival

If you’re looking for something fun (and free!) to do with the kids this weekend, Art 180 has got you covered with this day of art, music, and fun held in honor of Jon Zanin (known as Jonny Z) who died tragically and suddenly in 2007. Jonny Z was known for his creativity, compassion, and love for making art and music. What better way to honor his memory than to have a sweet time with your fellow Richmonders, enjoying the works of local artists and musicians? There’s also stuff for the kids, including hula-hooping, temporary tattoos, and a Spiderman moonbounce. Food from Joe’s Inn, Shield’s Market, Crossroads Coffee & Ice Cream, and Nate’s Taco Truck will be available. Featured performers include Liza Kate, Josh Smalls, Branch Clarke, Photosynthesizers, Chris Terry, and more. 10% of art sales will go to benefit Art 180. Saturday, August 8th, 12pm to 5pm, 200 block of Shields Avenue (between Grove & Hanover), free!

3. 26th Annual Carytown Watermelon Festival

It happens every year: the Watermelon Festival falls on what is likely to be the hottest damn day of the year, and tens of thousands of Richmonders STILL come. Is it because we are a tough breed or just slightly masochistic? Or maybe we just LOVE us some live music, sidewalk sales, and, of course, watermelon. Fine, let’s be honest. Most of us go to see all of the puppies and babies dressed up as watermelons. ADMIT IT, YOU. Sunday, August 9th, 10am to 6pm, Carytown, free to get in, but food and sundries cost extra. Go here for parking tips, performance schedules, and other information.

4. Movies & Mimosas: The Wiz

If you’re looking for an activity on Sunday that involves air conditioning (and champagne WOOHOO!) try this on for size: Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Lena Horne, and Richard Pyror (among others) star in this film adaptation of the Broadway musical retelling The Wizard of Oz within the context of African American culture. Seriously, look, it’s great:

I challenge you to leave the theater NOT singing that song. Sunday, August 9th, 11:00am, 1301 North Boulevard, $5.50 for general admission, $4.50 with your Criterion Club card. Mimosas cost extra.

5. Monday Night Moving Pictures and Music at Gallery5

In what seems to be a direct response to the hassle that smaller venues are facing because of CAPS, Gallery5 is hosting this “stream-of-consciousness smörgåsbord of video, film and music reflecting the overflow of artistic endeavors needing a space to exist.” The evening with start with 16mm films, followed by live music from Hot Lava, The Native Young, and Cubscout and the Rhinoceros set against TV mix tapes depicting “a dizzying collection of late night commercials, infomercials, local news, Chairobics and entertainment news clips.” Take that, fun police! Monday, August 10th, 7pm, 200 W. Marshall Street, $5.

None of these up your alley? See what else is going on around town this weekend.

Did we miss anything? Leave it in the comments.

(If you have an event coming up that you want help promoting, let us know. We’ll add it to the calendar AND it just might end up making this list!)

  1. And best of all… The Big Lebowski is Movieland’s insomnia movie Friday and Saturday night!! Gots to go see The Dude, man.

  2. Yes! I am so pumped about the correct spelling of smörgåsbord! Such an excellent word. And when you realize how hot it will be this weekend, just think of how much hotter it is on Venus…supa dupa, thats how much.

  3. Don’t think I didn’t copy and paste “smörgåsbord.” I know my limitations.

  4. I actually did too. Stupid US keyboards and their stupid codes for typing a “ö” and an “å”. Fargin’ Iceholes.
