Cheering, buying, voting, eating, learning—we as a city have put together a pretty sweet weekend for ourselves. Pat yourself on the back for having something or nothing to do with the setting up of the following five events.

1. Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship

International Women’s Day is this Sunday, making this month Women’s History Month. What are you doing to celebrate? What, you don’t have a huge party planned that will walk your friends and family through the stages of women’s suffrage? I reserve the right, as a woman, to judge you for that. I also reserve the right to not throw my own party because I have a right to take this month off from constantly cooking and cleaning for your friends and family. But we can all celebrate by heading to the Coliseum for the big-deal A-10 Women’s Basketball Championship, which we are honored to have in our little town.

 2. RVA Makers Handmade Furniture & Lighting Show

I was THIS close to not realizing that I’d typed “Furniture and Lightning Show,” which would have been really, really cool. Now I’m trying not to be disappointed at the reality of the situation. I guess when you look closely at it, the beautiful locally handmade light fixtures and lamps do sort of harness lightning, and a big spread of gorgeous things for sale is unlikely to kill you. So things are looking up! Attend the opening this Friday night as your First Friday your way around town, or come back anytime before the 22nd to stake your claim on various items!

3. TEDxRVA Open Mic Night

This year’s TEDxRVA theme, UNCOMMON, begins at Open Mic Night, where contestants have 90 seconds to pitch their ideas, and the audience votes to stick them in two slots at April 10th’s TEDxRVA. Plus, it’s a fun party.

4. Vincent, A Play by Leonard Nimoy

A stunning coincidence, as Mr. Nimoy’s death rocked the internet just a few short days ago, Starry Night Theater Company’s production of Nimoy’s Vincent hits CenterStage all weekend. Accept the majesty of humble Van Gogh’s life and all its meaning and significance during this popular play, and please try not to wear Spock tribute attire. There are ways to honor the dead and there are ways to turn their lives into a one-note song. I recommend the former!

GhanaFest RVA

Celebrate Ghana’s independence while also improving your mind-grapes with knowledge about Ghanaian culture and food (everyone’s favorite part of culture). This three-day event has all sorts of things for the whole family, and is a welcome break from our boring American lives.
