Halloween is STILL GOING, if you can believe it. But this weekend, as Halloween gets old and murky like an overripe jack’o’lantern, the gleam of other fall activities begins to shine through. Fortunately, many still involve beer, so the party’s not over yet.

Looking for things to do with the smaller versions of yourself? Fire up the family wagon and take a looksee at 5 Things for Families.

1.War Horse

The English favorite, War Horse, has galloped into Richmond, with the help of some talented puppeteers. This play’s won multiple Tonys for its innovative magicalness, and the general consensus is that it’s a must-see. Just give war a chance, man!

2. Richmond Ballet’s 30th Anniversary Celebration

It’s been three decades since Stoner Winslett and co. founded the state’s official ballet company. And now, the troop of hard-working dancers takes on its most ambitious program to date. Watch them take shore leave in Jerome Robbins’s Fancy Free, tackle the classics with Balanchine’s Serenade, and get all weird-like with Rite of Spring. This limited-run production borrows the Symphony’s talents and opens Friday night at the Carpenter Theatre.

3. Screens ‘n’ Suds

It’s no secret that Richmonders love craft beer. Patrick Henry brewed up a small batch to hand out to his “Give Me Liberty” audience after he’d finished prattling on and on. Thomas Jefferson invented a contraption to keep your wig from falling into your beer barrel. And Maggie Walker accepted microbrews as official currency. No kidding! This weekend’s Screens ‘n’ Suds asks that craft beer share the limelight with the unsung art of screenprinting. AND it benefits the National MS Foundation. Give me li-beer-ty, indeed!

4. Brunswick Stew Festival and Autumn Bottom Brews

That 17th Street Market. It’s always up to SOMETHING. This weekend it’s up to two things so precious I couldn’t bear to split them in twain. If you like Brunswick stew, head down there on Saturday. If you like beer (see Thing #3), head back on Sunday. If you want to wash the former down with the latter, you just have to time it really, really well. I have faith in you. Make us proud.

5. yART Sale

It’s a yard sale…for ART. Buy it! Sell it! Make it! Break it! (Don’t break it.) Use this opportunity to support local artists or use it to provoke the artist that’s been tightly coiled inside of you, waiting to sink its fangs into an unsuspecting public. Here’s hoping that process isn’t as terrifying as it sounds! This lone event will, they say, be part of a series, so consider helping it become as successful as possible.
