1. Carytown Fashion Feeds the Byrd

Carytown merchants got each other’s back, man. And the eclectic fashion boutiques in this mile of style are showing off their best goods for a Gatsby-era themed fashion show at Richmond’s very own 1920s movie palace. The Byrd gets the proceeds, which will hopefully amount to a lot more than tuppence a bag. Tuppence. Tuppence! Tuppence a bag!

2. Richmond Famous with Andrew Cothern

The Coalition Theater’s spur-of-the-moment storytelling sesh features “some of the most interesting people in Richmond,” and this installment is not to be missed. Andrew Cothern, creator of RVA Playlist and music writer for all sorts of local pubs, will be getting up there. If I personally were a music journalist, I’d probably describe the event like this: Andrew’s performance is a landslide of diamond-sharp wit with a molten core of genuine feeling, from which his textured, lush genius will emerge fresh and smooth. Fellas, I await my invitation to head up the next Richmond Famous. Ha! I’m not kidding!

3. VCU Broad Street Mile

You know how you really want to get in on this whole “exercise for a good cause” thing, but you wonder why they have to make it so damn hard? YOU DO WONDER THAT. ADMIT IT. Well, the geniuses at VCU have figured out how to make burning calories for charity a little more approachable by setting up a number of 1-mile jaunts that each benefit separate causes. Don’t let your fear of the middle school fitness test come back to haunt you—no one cares if you go fast or slow. For something more like that experience only infinitely more beautiful, try out the Maymont X-Country Festival on Friday and Saturday. It is NOT a music festival full of extreme country musicians, like I worried before I read about it, it’s a series of runs in a naturally challenging setting. Everyone else, I’ll see you all at VCU, breaking a mild sweat.

4. Off the Rails Craft Beer Festival

Well, well, well. What have we here. A craft beer festival, you say? In the land that brings us the most delicious tomatoes in the country? Why, what do those sweet Ashlandians know about the rugged world of craft beer? Shut your mouth! Hanover knows how to do it up, and this fest brings your faves up to train country to pour beer just for you (Hardywood, Center of the Universe, Legend, and more). Proceeds benefit Hanoverian culture in the form of the Arts and Activities Center, who know exactly how to get people to an event.

5. Classical Mystery Tour – Music of the Beatles 50th Anniversary Tour

Roll up! To the classical mystery tour! Beatles cover bands aren’t going the extra mile if they don’t perform with a symphony to round out their instrumentally diverse catalog. Those trumpets will be in your ears and in your eyes beneath the faux, blue suburban sky of the Carpenter Theatre as you experience the Fab Four the way they were kind of intended.
