1. Etsy Craft Party

Crafters, unite! And while you’re doing that, go ahead and make me a new scarf. You can never have too many, and the founders of Etsy.com probably agree with me. They’re probably sitting there, wrapped in scarves, congratulating themselves on having the idea for a global craft day. This second annual of its sort will focus on making things for the community.

2. LiveSky: Is There Anybody Out There?

Pink Floyd asked the question in some of the most poignant lyrics of all time, but this Friday night, the Richmond Astronomical Society wants to discuss it with YOU. You can share their telescope and perhaps…their brains?? Go see what you can see, and maybe you’ll learn something about the hordes of aliens who may or may not be coming to destroy us. At the very least maybe you could learn what it takes to be a member of the Richmond Astronomical Society, because I am all about it.

3. RVA Streets Alive!

If you’re like me, you’ve always wanted to amble around a street that would normally have cars on it and pretend like you’re living in a post zombie-attack world. RVA Streets Alive! gives you that chance. Stick to the highways, automobile drivers, and come on out the rest of you to the 2.5 mile loop of freedom from the tyranny of the horseless carriage. If we’re good, they’ll let us do it every year.

4. RVA Hackathon

I spoke to the host of this popular event, who was pleased and amused (I’m assuming both of those things) to tell me what I wanted to know. You get together with other nerds-I-mean-programmers and click clack away for 12 hours, making something cool and creative and whatnot. Hackathon is “perfect for anyone who develops and/or designs software and likes to work quickly and creatively.” Could that be you? COULD IT? There’s also delicious edible and drinkable offerings from Lamplighter, Citizen, and Hardywood.

5. Richmond Food Co-Op First Annual Summer Picnic

You got your food, you got your live music, you got your face painting, you got your games…what else even is there to include at a picnic? How about cooking demos and dessert competitions? Yeah! The people who do their best to help the hunger situation in Richmond are now inviting you to come celebrate the work they’ve done so far and help support their efforts in the future. And, uh, if you’re hungry you can get a picnic lunch from Olio, but you gotta call in advance.
