1. Single and Social: How to Find (and Keep) Love in the Digital Age

Dating has always been a crazy-insane game of who calls who and what should I wear and what does this mean and how exactly did he say it. It’s been awhile for me, and I still think about it with horror. But even for those of us who’ve found their match, the Internet has changed the way we react to each other. Now dating and relationships are more like I can’t believe you posted that horrible picture of me and who’s that dude tweeting winky emoticons at you and why didn’t you like my Instagram of my doughnut and she probably likes me if she requested me on LinkedIn. A panel of super-cool and very experienced men and women, all with connections to online dating and social media, share their thoughts about how these things work. Brought to you by Social Media Club of Richmond and fueled by alcohol, hors d’oeuvres, and many, many tweets, this event is bound to be entertaining.

  • Thurs. Feb. 21 • 6:00 – 9:00 PM
  • Barksdale Theatre at Willow Lawn, 1601 Willow Lawn Dr.
  • $17

2. Symphony Rush Hour: A Brandenburg Afternoon

How genius is the Richmond Symphony’s Rush Hour series? Instead of dealing with traffic (this I-95 project will almost certainly give me an aneurysm before the two years is up), you just hang downtown and catch some well-played classical jams. Tonight, it’s an exploration of Bach, Respighi, and more, so sit back and dream about flying cars while everyone else is trying to choose an exact change lane without a total idiot in it.

  • Thurs. Feb. 21 • 6:30 PM
  • Gottwald Playhouse at Richmond CenterStage, 600 E. Grace St.
  • $20

3. Yoga Is for Lovers

OK! OK! So many things to do tonight! I know! But don’t kill the messenger, cuz this messenger wants you to have a fun-filled Little Friday. If the symphony isn’t your thing and you don’t have the energy to deal with a room full of social media enthusiasts, perhaps what you truly need is a lululemon-sponsored yoga session with a ton of other people. Feel the ohmmm at the Hippodrohmmm, just bring your own yoga mat.

  • Thurs. Feb. 21 • 6:00 PM
  • The Hippodrome, 528 N. 2nd St.
  • Free!

4. Q94 and XL102 present: The Biggest HARLEM SHAKE Event in VA

Mere minutes before the world gets tired of the Harlem Shake meme, our commonwealth is going to blow it out, y’all! Head over to the National on Saturday night, and bring your zaniest costumes and props, because these two legendary Richmond radio stations are going to film you flopping around like an idiot in your friend’s gladiator helmet. Next stop, YouTube! And after that, the world! And after that, it’s back to your ordinary life, because seriously…we’re on minute 14, here.

  • Sat. Feb. 23 • Doors at 7:00 PM, Harlem Shaking from 8:00.00 to 8:00.18.
  • The National, 708 E. Broad St.
  • Free!

5. Zest Fest 2013

Like wine? Like good food? Hate hearing about hunger in our state? Treat yoself to a ticket to Zest Fest, where you’ll sample wine and cuisine from Richmond’s own native land. Get sloshed while you talk about how the crowd is so much bigger than last year and how your very presence is helping FeedMore’s noble cause. Who’s going to refute you?

  • Sat. Feb. 23 • 6:00 – 9:00 PM
  • Greater Richmond Convention Center
  • $150

6. Richmond Famous: Patience Salgado

What’s this!? A sixth, bonus event? Well, you made me feel so bad about jam-packing your schedule tonight with three wonderful things to do that I wanted to make it up to you. And make it up to you I shall!

Head on over to Gallery5 and witness one of Richmond’s kindest superstars, Patience Salgado, tell stories from her kindness-filled life from which the hilarious Richmond Comedy folks will improvise comedy. You’ll laugh, you’ll learn how to be kind to your fellow man, and you’ll wonder how anyone could ever be as amazing as Patience Salgado. Great times all around!

  • Fri. Feb. 22nd • 8:00 PM
  • Gallery5, 200 W. Marshall Street
  • $5

I can’t beleive you didn’t post the North American Open (NAO) kick off. Lil’ ol Richmond is host to one of the 12 top professional squash tournaments in the world (only 3 in US (NY and Chicago)), which will be run on ESPN 3. This little known but super intense sport will take place from this Saturday to the following. Qualifying matches take place Saturday at the new Short Pump ACAC, with the tournament beginning in earnest on Sunday at the Westwood Club. You should blast this today, because admission on Sunday is free. Tickets start at $10 the rest of the week.

If you like tennis, badminton, and other great racquet sports, squash is the best (my opinion) and most taxing. Even Roger Federer plays squash in off season. This is a rare opportunity to see the best players in the world up close, as every seat in the house is a great one. Countries represented include Eqypt, GB, France, India, China, and many more. Most of the top 30 players in the world are coming to Richmond. Check it out.

Susan, please spread the word. Folks listen to you.

  2. @Richard Day – Thanks for the tip! And also for the compliment!

PEOPLE: I just learned a lot about squash, and you should too. Read the above and check it check it out!

  3. Enjoyed reading the new ideas.
