5 things

We’ve got some art, we’ve got some comedy, we’ve even got a little of the outdoorsy tossed in there for good measure. Take a gander at our picks for 5 fun happenings in Richmond this weekend.

We’ve got some art, we’ve got some comedy, we’ve even got a little of the outdoorsy tossed in there for good measure. Take a gander at our picks for 5 fun happenings in Richmond this weekend.

1. Sally Mann: The Flesh and the Spirit (final days!!!)

If you haven’t seen this exhibit over at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts yet, DO IT! It closes on Sunday! If you’re not familiar with Mann, here’s a helpful blurb, courtesy of the VMFA.

Mann’s most recent work represents an intriguing new direction. She is tackling expansive themes of mortality and vulnerability, while for the first time using herself and her husband as subjects. In addition, she has taken her bold experiments with the medium to new heights, pushing photography to its limits by making painterly and nearly abstract images—many as unique pieces on glass plates. Altogether the exhibition and accompanying catalogue will present an unexpected picture of Mann’s work, encouraging a fresh perspective on one of today’s preeminent photographers and, it is hoped, an opportunity to extend her visibility well beyond the realm of photography.

Note: Some of the works in the exhibit include nudity and graphic images, so you might want to leave the wee ones at home — or at least prepare yourself to have potentially awkward conversations.

  • Runs through Sunday, January 23 (museum open daily 10am to 5pm and until 9pm on Thursdays)
  • Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (200 N. Boulevard)
  • $10; $8 for seniors; free for members and kids under 6

2. The Craigslist Show

I know you’re probably saying, “What’s with all the comedy stuff lately?” And it’s true, we did feature a Richmond Comedy Coalition event last week, and we even ran an entire feature on a very special show they just brought to Richmond, but the potential awkwardness/creepiness that could come from their next show is just too damn good to pass up. This time around, the inspiration for their improv scenes will be inspired by randomly chosen Craigslist ads. Yeah, that’s right.

  • Thursday, January 20 (8:30pm)
  • Gallery5 (200 W. Marshall Street)
  • $7; $5 for students

3. Richmond Fishing Expo

I know nothing about fishing, but they’re talking up something called a “bass tub” and they seem REALLY excited about. Plus, they’ll also have trout fishing for the kids which is sure to be fun.

  • Runs Friday, January 20 through Sunday, January 23 (opens at 10am on Friday and Sunday and 9am on Saturday)
  • Farm Bureau Center – Meadow Event Park (1 mile off I-95 at the Kings Dominion Exit)
  • $8 for adults; $7 for seniors; $5 for ages 6 to 12; kids under 5 are free

Teen Movie Matinee — Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

Teens these days, always wanting something to do. Well good news, the North Avenue Library has something planned for them. That’s right, a library! With books. Ok, this event doesn’t actually involve books, but who knows? Perhaps just being in the proximity of books will encourage the kids to actually pick one up. Anyhoo. They’ll be showing Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, popcorn and snacks will be available, and it will cost you zero dollars. Whoop!

  • Saturday, January 22 (2pm)
  • North Library (2901 North Avenue)
  • Free!

5. Raqs Luminaire

Bellydancing, music, storytelling, and MAGIC. Try to not be dazzled, I DARE YOU.
