2009: July – September

Despite how sluggish we all felt this summer, things were certainly busy in Q3. So much so that it makes Q1 and Q2 look like snoozefests. Stroll down memory lane with us for a bit…

Despite how sluggish we all felt this summer, things were certainly busy in Q3. So much so that it made Q1 and Q2 look like snoozefests. Stroll down memory lane with us for a bit…

As we all suffered through our post-July-4th crash, Christopher Elford came to our rescue and lifted our spirits with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as interpreted by a Sex and the City fan. For this we still owe him much.

July was also when we first got wind of the Ukropalypse as grocery industry publication Food World broke the news that Richmond’s favorite homegrown store was putting out feelers for bids. We all know how that turned out.

Later that month, a beloved local writer got evicted because of what he put on his blog. Meanwhile (on the same day, actually), there was a minor throwdown over the announcement that the Eagles picked up Michael Vick.

Things were slightly less heated as August rolled in (perhaps in order to provide a contrast to what it felt like outside) as we paid tribute to John Hughes and celebrated friends with bands and beers. Well, less heated until a certain someone busted in on the scene. As I’m sure you’ll remember, The Checkout Girl and her 100 Bad Dates came to RVANews just as August was coming to a close. And she’s been droppin’ jaws ever since.

September brought with it some lovely feathers in the ol’ RVANews cap, including our online sponsorship of the Richmond Folk Festival and the launch of our Eats directory.

And then everything exploded.

We had controversy over Obama’s back-to-school speech, protests over Buju Banton coming to town, and a certain display at Club Velvet.

We’ll wrap things up tomorrow with October through December, just in time to bid 2009 a proper farewell.

You know how news agencies have obits filed for high profile people just in case they die? I feel like you guys should go ahead and start writing the article about The Checkout Girl’s eventual termination from her job when a coworker discovers her blog. Not that I wish any ill will or know who she is, it just seems inevitable. That’s my rvanews 2010 prediction!
