WRIR, Richmond Independent Radio, is being awarded an Official Recognition Award from the Richmond City Council on Monday, July 27, for all of the community oriented activities and focus of the station. RVA Magazine launched its series of articles about WRIR today, beginning with the conception and evolution of the station (Radio For the Rest of Us: WRIR’s Evolution | RVA Magazine). The series will unfold with features on various DJs and their shows, so keep your RSS feeds pointed at RVA Mag’s Articles section.

Music shows on WRIR run every evening and throughout the night and are hosted by volunteer DJs. Some notable shows are Mike Rutz’s Activate! (Wednesdays, 7-9pm), which is a true music calendar for your ears that highlights local and touring acts playing in Richmond that week, and River City Limits (Saturdays, 5-7pm), featuring local music from right here in Richmond.

Jazz has a nice home at WRIR on Sundays. New Orleans Roots & More (9-11am), hosted by Bill Thomson, features music from the Crescent City and new jazz releases. New releases are also a highlight of Bebop & Beyond (11am-1pm) with Mr. Jazz (Mike Gourrier, the longtime WWOZ DJ from New Orleans), but an hour of classics and jazz legends begins every show. Michael Murphy spins soul, jazz, and funk on Mellow Madness (1-3pm), perfect for Sunday afternoon drives with the windows down. African, Caribbean, and Latin music continues into the evening.

WRIR is 97.3 FM in Richmond, VA, or streaming at www.wrir.org
