Wheelchair-using Glen Allen High student receives standing ovation for miraculous feat

Student Jim New made it his mission to walk across the stage on his own, a goal he achieved this week.

A Glen Allen High School graduate garnered thunderous applause as he walked across the stage at VCU’s Siegel Center this week. Senior Jim New has used a wheelchair to get around for much of his life.

The student, who has cerebral palsy, made it his goal to one day walk across the stage to receive his diploma back when he was a freshman, according to WTVR. New increased his therapy sessions leading up to graduation to ensure he would be able to achieve his goal.

Teachers, staff, and students cheered and shed a few tears as they watched New walk across the stage on his own.
