Westhampton Playground relocation underway
The Westhampton Playground has been closed as the property is now leased to Bon Secours as part of the Redskins Training Camp deal.
(Westhampton Playground pre-removal)
The Westhampton Playground has been closed as the equipment has been broken down and is being removed for relocation to the park between Granite and Libbie Avenues at Guthrie Avenue. Dominion Power should have the agreement with adjacent property owners to move the power lines around the new playground property complete this week and will then begin moving the lines away from the new playground. Once that work is complete, the playground equipment company will install the playground equipment at the new location which should only take a few days. We will keep you apprised of further developments and timetables as they become more clear, but hopefully the new playground should be open by early April. Thanks for your patience!

It seems a shame that the playground was removed right here at the start of Spring without 1. letting neighborhood parents have any notice (other than vague newspaper articles LAST FALL saying it was happening someday) and 2. waiting to remove the old playground until the new site was ready. I’m sorry, but this was poorly handled and leads parents to lose faith in the City. Is that really what Richmond wants and needs?
I’m excited to hear this move will take place relatively quickly. I tried to look this location up google maps-am I missing something? This location doesn’t seem to exist. There is no Guthrie Ave between Granite and Libbie. Is there a secret Guthrie Ave extension not shown on my google maps? Maybe Jon meant the Gutherie Ave between Maple and Libbie? I think there a “park” there now. And by park I mean a little grass and a sign calling it a park.
Muffin, it’s not moving to the small park in front of the school. If you drive down Libbie and get toGuthrie, there is a relatively large lot in between two houses that will hold the playground. It is not currently listed as a park. The space is literally between Libbie and Granite.
Where are the details on how parking, traffic, road access, trash control, late evening usage, etc will be handled? Is there a drawing of the new playground? Road access, traffic, and parking are highly significant issues considering the residential impact and from a safety aspect.
