Monday, January 12
Taylor Barnett will be giving his faculty recital at VCU’s Vlahcevic Concert Hall at 8pm. Says Barnett, it “will feature a big band playing all original arrangements and compositions by me, Doug Richards, and Bryan Hooten. Doug is directing the big band and I’ll be featured along with all of the usual characters, including Rex Richardson, Brian Jones, Trey Pollard, John Winn and JC Kuhl.” See more about VCU Jazz and Barnett.

Tuesday, January 13
–Trumpeter Tom Browne will be performing a tribute to Miles Davis as a part of the Richmond Jazz Society’s Guest Educators Series at Capital Ale House. A disciple of Freddie Hubbard, he is sure to have something to say about the legend’s passing. Read up on Browne and the event.

Wednesday, January 14
–Fight the Big Bull returns to Cous Cous for the first time in the New Year, alternating weeks with Ombak as before. [EDIT: Brian Jones, J.C. Kuhl, and Taylor Barnett will join the group as they debut new material for an upcoming album.]

–Guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg performs at VCU with his working quartet of Will Vinson (saxophone), Matt Penman (bass), and Mark Ferber (drums).
