VMFA celebrates 75 years of Visual Arts Fellowship Program
The fund, meant for professional and student artists, has awarded more than $5 million since its inception.
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is celebrating three-quarters of a century of a program used by professional and student artists to pay for education and supplies, take time off from jobs for creative exploration, and meet a variety of other financial needs.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the VMFA Visual Arts Fellowship Program. With the announcement of the most recent 27 Fellowship winners this week, the number of Fellowships awarded since the program’s inception reaches an impressive 1,250, with financial awards totaling more than $5 million.
Twelve professional artists, four graduate students, and eleven undergraduate students received awards this year.
“The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts celebrates this 75th year of its commitment to nurture artists throughout the Commonwealth,” Director Alex Nyerges said.
“We are grateful to the late John Lee Pratt of Fredericksburg for establishing an endowment that makes this support possible, as well as others who have contributed funds to further this mission-based objective throughout the years.”
