For several years, residents of the Rosedale neighborhood have been working on a bird habitat on vacant property at the intersection of Westwood and Lanvale avenues. Liz with the Rosedale Civic Association recently sent out the following update:

Rode around with “Noel The VDOT Contractor” who handles maintenance issues behind the fences of VDOT’s interstate properties. Showed him the areas where you can see the trash that’s built up along the fences, took him to the Bird Habitat, etc. You will begin to see activity as early as next week (weather permitting). He is sending out crews that will clean up the areas we can’t reach, mend the missing boards on that wooden fence out there, and hitting the areas at all the overpasses from Westwood to Laburnum. Noel will be keeping an eye on the trash situation personally, long after this initial clean up, so this is a great thing for us. More activity will happen as we get closer to spring, such as putting out herbicides for the poison ivy growth and making some other areas more accessible/attractive once the weeds are abated. This is something we’ve been trying to get since probably 2003, so it’s nice to finally deal with someone who will get the job done. Thanks to Jennifer McClellan for starting the ball on this one.
