The week of Thanksgiving has the men’s basketball team (2-1) playing on the road, again, this time at East Carolina (3-1) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Rams will then depart for Cancun, where they will face New Mexico on Saturday at 11 p.m. (our time) in the Cancun Challenge. On Sunday VCU will play against either Drake, or Vanderbilt, depending on who wins.

Last week the Rams cruised past South Dakota St. (72-56), but suffered their first loss of the season at Rhode Island (92-86). Senior guard Eric Maynor poured in a team-high 29 points and dished out five assists against SDSU and followed with 22 points and eight assists at URI.

Maynor shot 57.6% from the floor last week and extended his double-digit scoring streak to 19 games. VCU shot a sizzling 60.7% from the floor at URI, but couldn’t overcome 26 turnovers, which was its highest total since 2001.

The 92 points allowed at URI was the most by a VCU opponent since 2002.

Sophomore guard Joey Rodriguez hit 4-of-6 treys and added 14 points off the bench at URI. Junior forward T.J. Gwynn is a perfect 13-for-13 from the floor this season. Junior forward Kirill Pischalnikov grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds in just 19 minutes against SDSU.

The VCU women’s basketball team (1-1) is at home against East Carolina (3-0) on Tuesday; tipoff is at 7 p.m. On Saturday they travel to Albany for a 2 p.m. game.

The women’s volleyball team is also traveling. The Rams play at New Mexico State on Thanksgiving night, and at New Mexico on Saturday. Having lost to Delaware on Sunday evening in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament, the game against NM St. will conclude their season.
